Mountain Biking - Buying Tires for Newby

I was given a Trek Y26 it's pretty new condition except for the tires.

What are the widest tires I can put on the rim ? The rim is a Matrix 750 26"

what kind of riding do you do, what kind of riding to you want to do with the bike.
if you are going to stay mostly on pavement you should go with the skinniest tires you can find since it will be less drag.

i see no reason to go really wide, sure you get more traction but you get more drag i have a really old trek with no shocks and 1.8 tires as a bar bike and a trail work bike, something i can leave laying around and not worry or be pissed off it it gets taken. i hit some good trails with it on the way home from trail work all the time and it works just fine. i do have 2.3 on my Xcal

Sorry for not being specific. I'm 99% going to be riding on trails (dirt, sand, mud). The widest will be best but can I go 26 X 2.5 ? Currently stock tires are 26 X 1.95.

2.5 doesnt sound like a problem, as long as there's enough room on either side of the tire so it doesn't hit the fork. I remember someone putting a 3.0 on their bike and there was only a milimeter or 2 on either side. Great until the rim gets out of true.

how does it not sound like a problem? Do you own a Trek Y-bike? Have you put 2.5in tires on your y-bike?

This is not talking about your average FS, this is an outdated bike where quite likely, a tire width of 2.5 inches was unheard of.

I was just down at my local bike shop this weekend and the widest Tires I can fit are 26 X 2.3 otherwise they'll rub in the back.
