I decided to try to mount my light system to my helmet... This is much better than bar mounting, i see more and feel much safer.

Also I am now a self sufficient system i can walk, or ride, and switch bikes with out hassle. Just click the switch and go.

The mount might not look sturdy, but it is sturdy enough, i want better rubber bands though.

The general consensus among MTBers is that helmet-mounted is better than bar-mounted, if you had to choose one. Ideally you would have both. Myself I have a 25W on the bars and a 20W on the helmet (both halogen), although for city commuting, I don't turn the helmet light on--1) I don't need it then, and 2) drivers think I'm a motorcycle or scooter and give me tons of space and right of way.

BTW, is that an over-volted 20W 12V MR16?

rather than rubber bands. I'd even mount sticky velcro (use very heavy duty outdoors grade) to the lamp and my helmet and still use the straps.

Not making fun of your setup at all, but I have to laugh, if I asked my wife to take pictures of me like that, she would probably die laughing! I would have to use the self-timer on my camera. Seriously though, thanks for posting the picts, they are very helpful.

Do you find you can aim away from oncoming eyeballs and still see enough to be safe? I recently pulled my L&M halogen off my bar and used the velcro attachment for my helmet but I haven't had a chance to use it in the dark yet. I'm wondering if I should put less intense LED on the bar as well.

Unless I'm specifically trying to aim my light at someone or something, I usually turn my head away from oncoming traffic. It takes just a little practice but you get used to it.

The 13W helmet-mount HID was really good for that. When I caught up to drivers who cut me off, I rode right up to their windows and shone my light in their faces. Most people looked embarrassed, most squinted and some played dumb - shrugging their shoulders as if to say, "What, I'm not the only one on the road?".

Thats the huge bonus of having a head light, you can aim it where you need it, i usually don't worry about traffic, if i need to see; i need to see, but if there are street lights then i shine the light away a bit. No one has high beamed me yet so im ok.
Its a 10deg spot with nice spill, with my 36deg flood, its like a wall of light, i would never use that on the street, i used to use it off road but now with a spot on my head i can see what i need well enough too keep up a good pace. With the flood on the handle bars i think i would be nicer for night time off roading. Just need a second batt pack.

Thanks to kmcrawford111 for the straps, the light really holds it's ground now, no more wiggling around. I can attach a red led light to the side now, since there is more support.

I recognize the velcro strap in the last picture, but what are the blocks you using under the light?

They are molds crafted from layers of foam sheets glued together and then covered in one layer epoxy and a touch of hot glue to add some grip.

The bottom one is molded to fit the groves in the helmet, and the top one is molded to hold the light assembly. The two are joined by the flat side. The whole thing is held by the down force of the velcro.
