OK, I'll follow instructions and intro myself.
I'm a 43 year old American who lives in Surrey, England I grew up on a series of Schwinn bikes in the wonderful flat lands of northern Ohio.
In my late 20s, I got back into biking with one of the original Bianchi Volpes, which was being offered in the late 80s as a sort of cross bike, but now looks a lot like a touring bike with the cables running across the TOP of the bottom bracket.
After 8 months in Austria that was too busy to do serious biking, followed by 18 months in England, I decided that I was as ready as I was going to get for riding a bike on the left side of the road. Everyone likes to complain about the drivers in their own country, but you have to believe me when I say that I was more than pleasantly surprised that the typically English driver was as skillful in dealing with bikes as in maintaining lane discipline on the motorway. There are lots scarier places to ride on the road than the B roads in Surrey.
At this point, a son in his early teenage years and a wife missing the exercise opportunities presented by walking trips in Austria are both showing some minor promise that they will at least tolerate the idea of occasional bike rides.
I don't know if I'm a serious biker or not, but its a glorious feeling to be zipping through the English countryside on a pair of 28 cm tires.
