So I've been wanting to build myself up to a century. I commute to work from NoHo to Culver City everyday so I ride quite a bit, but usually only 14-16 miles at a time.
Today I finished 52 miles, the furthest I've probably ever riden. I went out to Santa Clarita and rode up Francisquito Cyn to Lake Elizabeth road to Bouquet canyon back into Santa Clarita. The ride was great, despite fierce winds at the top of Bouquet. There's nothing like grinding on level ground in small ring and large cog trying to keep a tuck. I guess it was preparation for riding home from work during Santa Ana winds! At the end of the ride I didn't collapse and felt I could ride further if needed.
So I'd like to step it up on the next ride, probably in two or three weeks (I alternate between the MTBs and the road bike on weekends). I want to get it into the 60's, a "metric century" or more. The hills on todays ride didn't kill me since most of it was gradual, starting at 1200, topping out at 3800 ft, and about 3500 ft. of total climbing. I try to avoid long steep grades since my bike is a standard double crankset and pretty standard road gearing on back.
Any advice is appreciated, thanks!
Alan

Good job, Alan.

Sounds like you are right on track. Keep your eye on the board and a 60-70 miler will pop up before you know it. :)

From Culver City, you can ride down to the beach and up into Palos Verdes and back. There are hills in PV, but nothing too bad if you stick to the main roads til you reach the back by Trumps golf course where it'd be about time to turn back anyway.

If you get some climbing gears, there are no end of ~60+ mile rides though SFValley/Mulholland area.

I also like PCH, though many don't due to traffic. You can park at the bottom of Topanga and ride up PCH to Las Posas and back which is about 60 miles. Traffic is annoying from Topanga to Pepperdine, but it clears up after that. That ride has lots of rolling hills but nothing too long.

My buddy is doing the century, I am doing the metric...
If you rode Bouquet and SF Cyn..you should be able to do this one!

Actually, my commute starts in NoHo, so I've ridden every inch of eastern Mulholland more times than I can count. With my gearing the only section that gives me trouble is getting up from the Cahuenga Pass to the Hollywood Bowl overlook, it gets a little steep, but I still do it.
It hasn't occurred to me to ride the beach path all the way to PV and back. I lived in Lomita and Hawthorne so I've ridden that a lot as well. The last time was early this last summer and it was miserable, I'd have to wait for a really gloomy day to avoid the crowds. Redondo pier is always a pain, though.
I've been checking out the group rides y'all put together but I never ride with anyone so I don't know how I'd fair. I don't work Fridays currently so I was looking at the Nov 2nd ride, but I might have to put the skinny tires on the commuter (La Salsa Las Cruces with compact crankset) to make it up that much elevation.

Try the San Fernando Bike Club. We have several rides every Saturday and Sunday with riders of all abilities. If you'd like to get a feel for it, come out on a Sunday, most of the regulars just do 30 miles or so. Park on Nordhoff, west of Lindley, roll at 8:00. SFVBC.org
