A friend has an old Specialized Stumpjumber FS bike. It seems to be in decent shape, no cracks or rust. Deraileurs need some work and the chain rings are beat up pretty bad. Wheels are not true and need some work also. I am trying to determine how old it is. It has a threaded stem and direct pull cantiliever brakes. Components are all Deore LX. Any way to identify the age, or any ideas? Also, approx value. It needs some series cleanup and such, and I he is not sure of the value....I would love to get it cheap, but I want to be fair.

Looks like a early 90's bike: probably no later than '92. I would say $200-$250would be a fair deal.

I'd say more like $20-25. If it were a "vintage" '83 stumpy, I'd give it a lot more value.

There's a not-so-fine line between "used" and "junk". That bike crossed the line years ago.

How can you be sure? My 1990 Rockhopper Comp, bought new, still has Deore wide profile cantis. I thought linear pull brakes were mid ninties.

Well, the seriel number starts with a 93A, so is it a 92 or 93? Also, what size with the steer tube be, 1" or 1-1/8"?

oops, sorry, my mistake. it was the '93 catalog I found it in.

Not sure of the steerer tube. The headset spec says it's a Pro alloy OS, which I assume to mean oversized, also assuming that means 1 1/8". But the stem looks to be a 1" quill, so I can't be certain. Can't you measure it yourself?

there were 1 1/8 inch threaded headsets made, my 92 mountain bike has one. to find out, you measure the quill diameter. If the diameter of the quill is 1'', the headset is a 1 1/8. if the quill is a 22.2mm, its a 1 inch.
