Clydesdales/Athenas (200+ lb / 91+ kg) - First Ride with Mirror

How crap, I should have gotten one of these things earlier, it sure as hell made riding at night feel a whole lot safer. I can't believe I went so long without one. Highly recommend it if you thinking about one.

+100 on them blackburn mirrors. I use the road mirror that attaches to the brake hoods. I like it much more than a helmet mirror. I used a helmet mirror on my first century ride and felt like I was crosseyed afterwards. lol

+101 I feel naked without my mirror. I have the exact same Blackburn model!

I have a bar end mirror, don't know the brand. It is a plus, for my road bike, but now I think I need one for my comfort/hybrid that I ride with the wife. We ride on the street in town and it would be a plus.

I got a mirror a few weeks ago and was similarly impressed. I can't imagine riding without it now.

I have a helment mirror. I like it, but it has to be adjusted just right or its a pain. I have been thinking of getting one of the mirrors that mounts inside the end of the handle bar. Are they that good? I have also seen the kind that mount on the center bar and looks between the riders legs. Does anyone have this kind? What do you think about them?

I have a bar end type on a comfort bike that works great. I rode a borrowed rode bike for a couple weeks that didn't have one and that was bad. I have bad shoulders and don't look behind me so well. I would like to see a picture of that Blackburn road mirror that mounts on brake hood, mounted.

I use a Take-A-Look eyeglasses mounted mirror. I like it because I can "scan" behind me just by turning my head, and it's not as affected by vibration as a bar-mounted mirror (in my experience).

That's the one I got too. I just got it a month or so ago and was blown away too about how much safer I felt being able to easily see behind me.

I have the Blackburn Road Mirror. I can't use a barend mirror, because I have barend shifters. The Road Mirror is okay, except the mount isn't very solid, so it shakes over the smallest bumps. It needs to be beefed up, or triangulated somehow. (Are you listening, Blackburn?) I have a barend mirror on my mountain bike that is much more solid.

Probably the most solid, would be a mounting ring, similar to a radiator hose clamp, in that you put the ring around the bars, then tighten the screw until it's tight, the mirror part then is attached to the ring part, so that it covers the adjusting screw, leaving only the ring visible. Next time you tape the bars, you simply install the ring before you start, and tape right around it, once the mirror unit is attached, everything is hidden. Although one of the problems I find, is that with all the crap that ends up attached to the bars, there isn't a lot of room for anything else.

I can see where that really works well. Glad it works for you. I bought one at my local bike shop but ended up taking it back. For my daytime riding it was more of a distraction than help, I was constantly adjusting it or leaning to see. Maybe you get used to it after a while. But my own eyes and ears seem to work best for me right now.

I used to use a mirror that clipped on my glasses and have switched to a bar end mirror. I kept forgetting the clip on mirror.
