I was in Competitive Edge in Rancho Cucamonga recently to look at a bike. I was told that they will measure me to determine the proper bike size, then order the bike of my choice in that size (assuming the bike comes in that size), then spend an hour fitting the bike to me before I take it home (at no extra charge). He spent a lot of time with me listening to my likes and dislike in bars. I am trying to figure out if drop bars are right for me (I have neck problems that flare up if I bend my head back, so I am looking for a relaxed geometry bike). He presented some other bar options that I liked and adjusted the stem on one of the bikes I rode. He also told me about their policy of 2 free years of service after the purchase.

The guy seemed willing to jump through hoops for me, offering deals/discounts if we purchase more than one bike, and a discount flyer if we purchase by the end of the year, etc.

Of all the LBSs we've been to, this one seems to have the best combination of fit+service policy.

I'm wondering about others' experience with the fitting and service at this particular store. It's the furthest LBS from our home, but I'm willing to travel to a good shop.

If you're just a rec rider with the occasional time trial, and brevet, try BentUp Cycles in Encino on Balboa. You shouldn't have any pain (other than your legs) when you're riding a bike.

Comp Edge is a good shop. Both stores have been around for a while. It was probably Mark H. that was helping you. He's been riding longer than I have and I used to frequent the Upland Competitive Edge when he was a mechanic there. He has never "fit" me but he has helped me build and set up several of my team bikes over the years. He is a great mechanic and should be able to get you fitted really well.

Yeah, I would say Mark H. He's a great guy and mechanic. When I had wheel problems, he was the guy that turned in the right direction. I've followed him around since 1997. Meaning whatever shop he works at, I'm there. Ridden with him several times. He's the kind of guy you want as a friend!

Comp edge is a good shop, rode with Mark H. about a month ago.. Both the Upland and Rancho shops have good service.. I would not hesitate to buy anything there.. we are lucky in the I.E. that we have a few great shops where you get good service..

Thanks everyone. Glad to know I'd be in good hands there.

Yeah, the Rancho store is good. But during the cycling season they get backed up for repair work. Not a slam against them, just that they get so busy (doing good work) that it takes a while to get a bike serviced.

I've only been to the Upland store afew times and they've been pretty okay. :) One of our SoCal BF members is/was working there (maybe for just the summer) but i forget how to spell their username...

Sjmayclin (sp?) was working at the Upland store. I think he's back at school in Irvine now. Like Beanz, I've followed Mark around to a few stores since I was racing juniors. He and Jack at Coates are about the best mechanics, in my opinion, in the western 909, and many of you know I am very loyal to Incycle. Mark and Jack were actually a team at the Upland Comp Edge in the mid '90s. That made it easy because then I only had to go to one shop.
