Introductions - Greetings from N. Texas

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Newbie to bike forums. How often do you hear,"Its free, just take it"? Well with those words still echoing in my ears, I loaded up an old bike into my trunk and headed home. On first inspection, I think I did alright. But wait, how could I go wrong for "free"? Please share any thoughts as this will be my first, Trash to Treasure project. Thanks ! So far heres what she looks like. Nishiki Sport Series, Shimano-SIS-light action. Araya rims, Dia compe brakes. Sugino VP pedals. Shes pink, she has a gel seat over a perfect seat. The bad news so far, completely flat rear tire, and the front will go soon. Complete overhaul at local bike shop is 150. Not sure about tires. Her name will be Jenny as in Craig lol
First question, anyones best guess at possible age of bike?

Post pictures please. More detail on the gear shift lever and derailler names/models would help estimate the age and how many cogs at the back? Spend some money on tools and follow the maintenance instuctions on Park Tool and Sheldon Brown websites. Start off with hex keys, cone wrenches, tire levers, pump and a spoke wrench.

Mid 1980's. It would be easier if you posted a photo, though.
Welcome to BF!

I agree, sounds mid to late 80's. Shimano Light Action was a budget indexed shifting group. I had an 87 Trek 400 briefly that had light action gear on it. Good all around gear, should treat you well. Where abouts in N.Texas are you? Lots of Dallas area members on the boards, as well as all around Texas. Be sure to stop by the Texas regional forums.
