Road Cycling - What would you get for $1800?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I'm looking for a new bike. What kind of bike should I get for under $2000? I'm looking at Trek's, Cervelo's, and Cannondale's. Right now Cervelo's are looking nice. Any general suggstions out there? Thanks! z
I'm surprised that you're looking into only 3 makes of bikes.. But I agree, the Treks, Cervelos and Cannondales are good.
But I would suggest you try looking at lemonds, K2, specialized, schwinn and giant.. They also make great bikes.
Also, there are a lot of custom frame makers you would want to try.. Sycip, etc...
If you want value, try looking at Fuji bikes also..
with a $1800 budget, you would get a bike with at least Shimano 105 components.. Even one with Ultegra.. and a nice set of wheels.
What frame material is your preference.. steel? aluminum? composite? Ti?
I am a fan of steel frames, so my vote would be biased..:D

I'm looking at Independent Fabrications. Not sure about pricing yet, but I think you could hook one up for a little more than your current budget, (which, I assume, is flexible given the fact that you're looking for a bike).

If you are interested in a aluminum frame you might check out Felt bikes they are under your cap. Actually there are alot of bike in this price range so the best idea is to go to a few shops and see what they have to offer and bring your pedals and shoes so you can test ride them. The LBS might be having a sale so you could really score a deal on a bike that was out of your price range. .
I would consider getting either a used Ti Bike (litespeed, merlin) or go with an aluminum frame with carbon seat stays. The ride quality is HUGE compared to normal alum. also consider the lemond zurich, its around 2K or so, but the steel is the lightest(reynolds 853) and also comfortable.

Remember that Cannondale has taken the edge off of their frames with the hourglass stays. Simple. Elegant. And it makes the bike ride a lot better than their old ones.

Sorry, but I'd get a mountain bike:D
I agree with aluckyfiji. My son just bought a Felt F35R. The component package is unbelieveable for the price. He just bought a 2003 model for $1,700. And he loves the way it rides.

Remember, buy something you can afford to fix. Can you afford a new Dura-ace rear derailleur or a replacement Ksyrium wheel?
Bianchi has a nice 105 equiped bike as well as Litespeed..
Try the vela: http://litespeed.com/english/bikes/vela.html
or the giro: http://www.bianchiusa.com/site/bikes/42_Giro.html
Wait for them to go on sale and you'll have plenty of cash left over for extras like a good lock, a good helmet, or perhaps a cadence computer or maybe a spare set of wheels.
Get a FONDRIEST Madonna Di Campiglio frame for $799 and buy components and wheelset to fit your budget. You could get it outfitted with Campy Chorus and a cheapwheel set for less than $2000. It would be a kick ass bike. A sweet sweet ride.

Nevermind Independent Fabrications for your budget. The framesets are outragous. Custom, but expensive beyond reason. Now, I'm looking at Orbea. They have some great complete bikes available now. I know a lot of guys that are on Orbeas and love them.
Gunnar roadie frame(about $850 frame and fork) and build it w/ your choice of components. It's a nice riding tig steel frame from the folks at waterford.
