Classic & Vintage - Daddy needs new shoes!

Just won myself a NIB pair of Atala Sport Gino Bartali size 44 shoes on the 'Bay, complete with TA steel cleats. I'm not entirely sure if I can fit a narrow Italian size 44 (I'm a reasonably wide 44), but I figured it's worth a shot. I've got my eye on a wider pair as well, but I didn't wanna blow and end up with no shoes at all.

That's ebay's hook, to make people think they're winning some sort of competition when all it does is drive up they're percentage.

And depending on what they're made from, they could very well stretch enough to fit you once they're broken in a bit.

An auction can certainly be construed as a contest measured by the amount of money willing to be spent on an item by multiple individuals. Does ebay hype their auctions to get a bigger cut? Well duh, this is a capitalist country the last time I looked.

Next time you auction something on ebay, maybe you would like it better if the "winner" had the lowest bid.:rolleyes:

I'll never cease to be astonished at people's wierd attitudes to eBay. Before it existed, you just couldn't find lots of things you wanted, and if you HAD things other people wanted, you couldn't find the customers who wanted them. eBay is well worth what we pay for it.

I'm hoping they show up before Thursday so I can bring 'em with me to Santa Cruz for the alleycat race on Saturday. Anyone have any experiences with the steel cleats?

Well, I lost out on the wood-sole Duegis. Wasn't worth another $44 to me. I'll report back once I get the Atalas.

I love supporting local business, but most local businesses don't carry NIB slotted-cleat cycling shoes. Especially not for (most) eBay prices.

It honestly makes me laugh to read something as ludicrous as that. Are there scammers on ebay? Probably less than used car salesmen. 99% of the sellers are other vintage enthusiasts, no roulette involved. I do see the occasional "contact me not through ebay" scam with vintage bikes but you would have to be a real idiot to fall for that scam.

More common is the misrepresented part/bike. Again, don't be so stupid to bid on something you don't know. If you are actually that thick, I got a bridge over the East River to sell you.

Yes. First you ride the shoes for a week or two without the cleats. Let the pedals put a line on the sole. THEN attach the cleats, using the line as your guide. First time perfect fit, every time.

So far in 146 personal transactions (buying and selling) and 160+ for the motorcycle shop I work for, I've had one (count 'em, one) bad experience. And I do support my local businesses - unfortunately none of them had the Campy Tipo hubs I won about an hour ago.

Besides, the selling side is why I'm able to buy the vintage parts I need to build and keep my current stable running. I've got this rule: If the money isn't in the PayPal account, I don't bid on vintage parts. Nice way to keep the hobby going while not infringing on mortgages, grocery bills, etc.

Were it not for eBay, my entire vintage parts buying would be the Feb MD swapmeet, Trexlertown someday, and whatever Poguemahone has found for me. Which means I'd have a few bikes hanging off the wall, in pieces, for years on end.

The notion of "winning" an auction has been around longer than eBays existance. Its universal to auctions online or offline

The soles needed to be re-glued (the original glue was all dried up and cracked in the first few steps) but now they're all ready! Waiting on new toe clips that actually fit me, then I'll be able to ride with 'em.

Those Italians sure have narrow feet! Gonna need to let these stretch a bit...
