Back on the bike, and slow as a turtle. Mt Tam ride with some additions.. I'm doing the ride, but I will do a secondary ride, an out and back, Mikes bikes to fairfax and back about 25miles, and the hard core group can keep going up over Tam. So anyone not up for the big climb can regroup with me and ride back. I'll get more details, next weekend I'm doing a reconissance next Saturday, I need to make sure of a couple of road names in San Anselmo. I go a little off the beaten path. Anyway, great to be back on the wheels.
Pete

Great to hear you're back, Pete. And great to hear the ride is on! Looking forward to it. I've never been to Mt. Tam, so this will be a first for me.

Hey, Just to give you a heads up since some are leaving from the city, I'll be at Mikes at 10:00 am start time. for those driving if you get off past the Waldo tunnel half way down the hill there's an exit (Rodeo Ave), follow that east 1/4 mile hairpin onto Nevada, and there's non metered non permit parking, Just before Bridgeway. Park there , on to the bike, left on bridgeway, and just follow the bikes, they'll be like hornets heading for the nest (mikes bikes). Don't get stung! by the blazing saddles bee's they're very dangerous and unpredictable!

Alan,
I'd be up for this too. My plan would be to take the earliest possible Caltrain going up to SF. Who knows, maybe we can make a century out of it ... :D

I've been looking up this course of action too. It looks like the earliest Caltrain on Sat is Train# 421. It leaves San Jose at 7:00 am and arrives at San Fran at 8:36 am. Caltrain LINK (http://www.caltrain.com/timetable.html#weekend-northbound)
The question is is this early enough to ride from that point to Mikes Bikes in Sausalito.

Looks like Bart gives more alternatives ... gets to Embarcadero as early as 6:20 am ... I might try going to the Millbrae station to catch bart.

1.5 hrs should be plenty of time to get to Mikes Bikes. I'll probably do this option as well.
The kids' game schedules look dismal (0900 volleyball, 1150 soccer, 1355 soccer) but this ride has been on the calendar for a long time so wifey should be able to handle a morning without me.

There's a ride within the ride on this one ... from Caltrain station at 4th and King, to Mike's Bikes. I especially like the part where we go under the GG bridge, to the other side to Sausalito. I just don't know how to get to the bike path ... or is it just beyond downtown Sausalito? And once on the bike path, are there any tricky turns, or is it just a straight shot to Mike's bikes?

Ron, as soon as you get off the bridge it's a straight shot down to Sausalito, and just follow the main road through (bridgeway) They'll be ten billion bikes heading that way, from downtown Sausalito, it's about 2 miles, and you'll run right into the bike path, there's a tiny shopping area on the right, Mikes is right at the begining of the bike path.

Ron/Sesame - We could potentially have a pre-meeting on the far side of the bridge if you want to follow some people there. Some of us are meeting in the Sunset and then riding up so we could meet you at the parking lot on the far side of the bridge and then you can follow us to Mikes.

I'm not sure what Pete has planned -- he mentioned in his original post that he goes a "little off the beaten path" in San Anselmo.

In the meantime, Velogirls.com has a route sheet for this ride (http://www.velogirls.com/resources/routedocs/alpine_dam_sportsbasement.doc). It starts and ends at the Sports Basement on 6th Street in SOMA, but as long as you know how to get to the Bridge from wherever you're starting, it works well for the rest of the ride.

Also, I live in the Outer Richmond, so if you want to meet up somewhere and ride to Mike's, let me know.

so it seems there are a few of us that will be riding from either sunset or richmond. I count at least 5-6. so let's have a meet up spot for us, so we can ride together. Any suggestions?

By outer richmond, do you guys mean ocean beach or closer to 25th ave.

We need to somehow coordinate this Caltrain group so we can all meet at the same spot. It would be nice to have a "nice leisurely sight seeing ride" before the climb to Mt Tam. It'll be a nice warmup.

Which way do you like to access the Presidio? Arguello Gate, 25th and El Camino Del Mar, 15th and Lake? Could meet at any of those places, or somewhere in the park maybe.

lemondzurich and I are by the beach on the sunset side, both on vicente. I believe O_o is right near the beach on the richmond side. We could possibly just meet at the edge of the park. I usually go though Arguello Gate by don't mind 25th ave either.

Hey great directions thanks for the info, perfect route, I would recommend everyone down load it and print it out. The only thing I do different is before downtown San anselmo, I go left on Bolinas ave, you'll see a big church and I just right, left through the west side of downtown. No cops, lights, or traffic, and less cumbersome to get through in a large group. Story Book winding roads too. You end up on the other end of San Anselmo Ave. Be careful of the cops there, they periodically crackdown on bikes.
I'm going out this saturday to get those street names.

yep , I'm pretty close to the ocean and on the Richmond side , so I am open to meeting at the edge of the park, Beach chalet parking area to bad they are closed that early in the morning :p , SF Zoo , Safeway ON La Playa St or anywhere else. Meeting at the Beach Chalet parking lot would works for me. How about 9:00? Then we can make it to the far side of bridge and meet up with folks who want to follow us to Mikes around 9:30. Does that timing work or should we leave more room for error?

9:00am should be enough time to get from the Beach Chalet, depending on the route taken. I was planning on taking Great Highway up to Point Lobos then to 25th to the Presidio.

I hate going that way because I hate getting sand on my chain and wheels. but it is quicker. we can even go to legion of honors and take the back roads to 25th.

10-17-07, 04:53 PM
another similar route when we meet at the beach chalet would be to head over to gg park area head up JFK to Spreckels Lake / 36th ave , cross over to Cabrillo and over to 33rd ave. Then shoot up to Legion Of Honor Dr. , El Camino del Mar , Lincoln Blv/25th ave up to the GG bridge...
That Should avoid the sandy great hwy part. Lately there has not been a lot of sand on the Lincoln Blv rd. that shoots along the bay to the bridge.
I just added the shoot through the park part because it would be a little to watch the morning joggers run around...
Jinws suggested route for the ride to the GGB is a good one too. Oh well I am sure all of us could figure something out .

I was thinking of doing some extra miles after the train ride back from the city. I was thinking of taking Bart from Embarcadero to Millbrae, and riding south from the back to Santa Clara area.
