Hi all, last week was pretty cool, found a yardsale $10 69 Paramount P10 on Wednesday, and Thursday snagged a 73 Paramount P15 discovered on Craigslist by CV-6. The 73 is the most greasy bike I have ever worked on, and it has been poorly painted with a brush. But the chrome is all good and I'm going send it to Waterford for paint.

That leads to one question, I believe the bike was originally white, do you guys think painting it a different color would lower the value? I don't intend to pay the $50 for the provenance report, but that would show the bike as the wrong color. If I ever sell it I would be up front with the fact that it's a repaint anyway, I just wonder if changing the color might discourage some buyers.

My other question is does anyone know how long the bottom bracket spindle should be for a Campy Record Triple? I'm guessing around 120, 121 from the fact that the previous owner had a Shimano BB with a 115, shifted about 6mm to the drive side (see pics LOL!).

WOW! Two Ps in one week! What a deal! I used a 122mm Phil Wood BB to add a triple to my '66 P-13. It is offset slightly towards the drive side.

Wow, that is a lot of grease. And that BB set up is really scary...

Nice catches!

A piece of sheet steel stapled to the front derailer to keep it in one piece...and that glob of something or other to hold the cable to the top tube.

Talk about keeping it running when you have nothing on hand!

Have any more photos of the yellow one? I'm severely jealous of it...my size too! ;)

A big congrats to you John, and may there be beer on the house in celebration

Enjoy 'em!

-Kurt

P.S.: Any Schwinn color is game for the white one. To heck with what it had originally :D

Outstanding work! I am truly shocked that anyone can obtain TWO Paramounts in one week!

Having said that, how could anyone let a Paramount get in that condition? Isn't there a law or something??? If not there should be!

Thank you for saving it.

Well John, I must say I'm glad you took the pictures of that sad white Paramount. They will make a great before and after set of photos once you have the repaint done and some nice replacement components put on it. That bike deserves much better treatment and now it will get it. The funny thing about your two bikes is that the yellow one, which is in much better condition, is the one you got for $10. Did you pay this seller his full asking price?

Will you be able to get replacement decals from Waterford also?

Congratulations, again, for a fabulous week.

Lucky ...

do you guys think painting it a different color would lower the value? No ... I'd go with Sierra Brown, but if you're looking at resale, the Flamboyant Red, Black or Silver Mist would probably be better choices.

Did you wear gloves when handling the white bike? I think that's the nastiest bike I've ever seen. ;)

I can't wait to see the after photos. I don't think it could ever be a white bike again after the way it was treated.

Congrats on both finds!

Thanks all for the comments and congrats!

Kurt you shouldn't be too jealous of the 69, it's pretty rough. I saw a mint 68 go on ebay for $1025 the other day so I figure I have another 1015 to spend to make it right, it may take that too. I will attach a pic or two.

Stacy, you are right the grease is better than the rust which is the issue on the yellow bike. Although the white bike actually smells bad from all the grease, it should come out like new after stripping and painting.

Maureen, Waterford includes new decals with the paintjob. I was going to paint the yellow bike myself but a set of NOS decals just went on ebay for $109. By the time you figure paint stripper, paint, decals, and my time, I think I'll box it up and send it off too. Maybe I'll try the Oxalic Acid bath first and see if the chrome looks ok de-rusted.

Bob, I think the white bike is going to be Campus Green, to replace my 73 Varsity that was Goodwilled years ago, and maybe Sunset Orange for the 69. All I want for Christmas is 2 paint jobs! :D

does anyone know how long the bottom bracket spindle should be for a Campy Record Triple?

IIRC, the Campag. spindle for the old Record triple was 117mm end to end, and was asymmetric.

Great finds!

I love campus green on a Paramount....or any Schwinn for that matter!

Congratulations on two great finds! I think either Campus Green or Coppertone would be nice, and very Schwinnish.

I had Waterford do my 73. I didn't think that the chrome would come out right, as it looked very pitted to me...they would not rechrome, but said that they wouldn't paint if they couldn't get the chrome to come back...and they did. Two years later it looks good as new. Choose your decals wisely, as the olympic stripes were added, or not added, in this time frame. Bob Hufford can give you good advice depending on the serial number, I'm sure.

All right, you convinced me. I'll only give you $75 for it.

Bob, I think the white bike is going to be Campus Green

Can't argue with that - Campus Green is a fantastic color. Go for it!

I'm still floored by $10 69 Paramount. That's instant Viagra material.
