I'm hoping to buy a Specialized Tricross. A local guy has an '06 Comp for sale for $1000 firm - about 1000 miles on it, all on the roads, good shape.
Looked at an '08 at the shop and the big difference seems to be they've added carbon fiber seat stays with Zertz inserts, which seems like it could be significant in terms of trail comfort.
I'm buying the bike for some trail workouts (groomed stuff) and for winter commuting - not a racer. But it will probably be my only bike. The new bike is $1850. Worth nearly 2x the price?
I appreciate any thoughts!

That's not a bad price. I bought the exact same one for $900 a few months ago. It is absolutely the best bike I've ever owned. I've owned a bunch.... It doesn't do any one particular thing as well as a bike intended for that purpose, but it does just about everything very well. I use mine for rec. rides (done several century rides on it), daily commuter (I put a rack on it every Sunday night) and I bought another wheelset and use the stock wheels for offroading. I have the original Specialized Borough tires for that. Great bike. Only changes, other than wheels, that I've done is I have a standard double crankset. Mine is a 52/39 Ultegra crankset.
I just found an '06 Comp with about 500 miles on it (1000 miles away) and the owner shipped it to me for $800. Got it last week and haven't really had a chance to go more than 10 miles at a time, but I really like it. I was corresponding with a guy with an 07 Comp in Houston with 100 miles on it that he wanted $1000 shipped. He ended up selling it locally. google "'specialized tricross' craigslist" and see what you come up with. Of course you have to get comfortable with buying sight unseen from someone you don't really know...
Or get this 06 -- sounds like a nice bike at a decent price!
