I'm in. Plus Chuck, Tom Parkes and Dr. Jerry from our club (OCRR).

Hopefully we'll have decent weather!

Fall Solvang will complete Chuck's first Triple Crown, will be double a hundered and something for Tom, and will complete another Thousand Mile Club year for me. Not sure what for Jerry, but I'm sure he'll have fun!

Not me. I'm fat, tired and lazy and the last thing I want to do is ride 200 miles. :p

It's true, not that it matters for Steve-speed-demon-UMD. I'd see him at the beginning (maybe) and at the end...just long enough to snap his pic.

I don't know, I'm worried about surviving 200 miles this time. I've been feeling really down on energy lately and just barely managed the people powered ride last weekend. Felt reasonably good yesterday chasing a bunch of Amgen guys around the Mullholland Highway area but that was only about 50 miles and I was pretty happy to be done. I don't think I've even done anything much longer than 100 miles in months.

From what I hear, Autumn Solvang Double is really tough. So this is not one to do if it is your first double ... at least I wouldn't...

Maybe you've been bitten by the same strange insect that bit me! That's how I feel, only the energy part is in my head. I'm just not motivated and only want to ride for fun. Doubles can be described as challenging and rewarding, but they are not fun! Still, you're a pup, and knocking this one out is certainly possible for you. IF you want to ride it. ;)

I just decided to sign up. And I may have to ride it on my new TT bike due to a mangled rear der on my road bike. She's gotten me two wins in the last two weekend TTs, and is perfect for 20km, but riding that bike for 200 miles...should be interesting.

I'm car-pooling up to Solvang with Chuck tomrrow (Friday - 10-19-07) so I can relax for a bit in Solvang before the double. Hope to see lots of BF riders on Saturday!

I'll be wearing my Rebel jersey, but at the start it will no doubt be covered up by a jacket. This Fall Solvang is a first for me, though I have ridden the (easier) Spring Solvang three times prev. ('04, '05 and '06). I worked this one last year, so it should be fun to ride this time.

Yes, I will finish in the dark, but hopefully my 4 hr. of Nite-Rider battery will be enough!

Thanks Ron,

Looks like it should be really decent weather. Not a lot of riders (209 last time I looked), and not a lot of BF riders according to this thread. Still should be a good ride, and Planet Ultra does a good job coordinating all the aspects of the event to make for an enjoyable double.

I'll write a short report when I get home!

To everyone who did it, I hope you all had a good time. I had the 4th fastest time, but was only able to hang with the lead group for the first 50 miles until the start of Tempesquet. Adam finished with the lead group (of 4). I don't think WhiteCarbonDude had come in the last I checked. I think some shouted out to me on Tempesquet, sorry I didn't process it right away...

Good job UMD! I saw quite a few fast names on the roster, so coming in 4th is pretty impressive.

Good job UMD! I saw quite a few fast names on the roster, so coming in 4th is pretty impressive.

I wasn't 4th, just the 4th fastest time. There was a group of 4 that came in about an hour before me. Then there was this one guy and a group of two that came in a few minutes before me. I'm still working on a full writeup, but the short story is that I made "the break" over the top of Foxen and when we got to the bottom of the steep part of the descent I looked back and nobody was there.

I hadn't really planned on working that hard, but figured I was there and may as well try to stick with them. We were flying down Foxen, and when we pased by the first rest stop we were at 42 miles in 2 hours. I took a pull at 35mph for a mile and it took a lot of out me, and when my turn in the rotation was coming up again, I was next in line behind Adam and his pull was so intense I could hardly hold his wheel. I knew I wasn't going to be able to follow that, so I moved off and moved to the back, and let then subsequently let the next several riders come back into the line ahead of me off their pulls. When I finally felt recovered enough I moved back up in the rotation but when my turn was coming up again I couldn't do it and moved off to the back for good. When we turned up Tempesquet I knew I wasn't going to keep up and it would be stupid to try so I slowed down to provide some "emotional separation". I passed tons of 6-o-clockers on the climb, and basked in the perfect descent down to the 166. The smooth, clean road, combined with the perfect morning temp, alone with my ipod cranking was bliss. I stopped for a few minutes at the second stop to grab a banana and a few clif bars and talked with a guy that had been with the front group but got unhooked on the climb and was waiting for a friend. I rode most of 166 alone with some brutal crosswinds and was dreading the turn north, into the winds. I started to see some riders back in the distances and they caught me about a mile before the turn, which was great because I had people to share the wind with, and I stuck with them pretty much to the end. Due to some circumstances with flats, one of them came in ahead of me (1 of the group of 2), and the other 2 came in right after me. We probably would have all come in together as the second fastest time had 2 of them not had 3 flats

So that was my third double this year, giving me my triple crown :). And I want to thank Planet Ultra for organizing such a great event. I had a chance to talk to the woman that does it for a while (sorry I'm bad with names).

Good job Steve. All I can say is that I was glad not to be riding all that alone! The winds were ridiculous, and in many places even echeloning across the road provided little shelter. I think I took a few too many spirited pulls in the first half of the ride (first century in 4:52 total with headwinds), and was a little too careless with eating and drinking later on, because around mile 170 or so I began to crack hard. Rider of the day definitely goes to Keith though... he ended ridiculously strong, and pulled our little group of 4 a good portion of the last 15 miles at an impressive pace. It was all I could do to grit my teeth, sit in the draft, and embrace the burn of my weary legs,

Hmm, I don't think I saw a SAG car the whole ride...

I'm teasing, I'm sure you guys were back helping the riders that really needed it. It was fun being in the first handful of riders that hit all the stops though. At the 105 mile stop only one thing of hammer gel had been opened!

Yes, Lee (scvroadie) was out there!

I saw him at the 2nd checkpoint (with Dan Crain and Anny Beck), then again several hours later at the final rest stop.

Great job by all the SAG workers and volunteers!

My time was 14:38, and I think Jon (whitecarbondude) was 13 and change. He was getting a massage when I checked in!

The climbs were tough, but good, and the headwinds were brutal. The occasional strong cross-wind gusts were strong enough to move my bike about 2 ft. to the side! Pretty scary, but I didn't go down due to the gusts, and didn't hear of anyone who did.

I did the 6:00 AM start time and had a pretty good ride overall. About half the course was new to me, the other half was the same as the Spring Solvang Double.

So that was #5 for me for 2007, extending my Gold Thousand Mile Club to four years in a row. Now, Sunday noon, I still feel tired but don't actually hurt anywhere!

Ah, I only stopped at the second stop for a minute to talk to a guy (wearing Webcor) that had been at the front with me. Also skipped the last stop...

Actually M.E. I feel tired!

Feeling great will be a bit later . . . How many years? Well, my first was '84, Central Double Century in Litchfield, IL. Road a triple (my ony triple century) the next year. Anyway, none of that (nor the doubles on PBP) count for the CA Triple Crown.

So, . . . I moved to CA in '96, met Jackie in '99. Jackie talked me into trying the Davis Double in 2003 (we were married in Dec. 2002) and that first year I did Davis, Grand Tour and Knoxville.

In 2004 I rode four doubles; added Buterfield (flood) and Hemet for a total of five.

In 2005 and 2006 I rode seven doubles,

And now in 2007 I've ridden five again. So 26 CA doubles and four years of Gold Thousand Mile Club.

I'm sure you'll have big totals after a few years too!
