Thanks everyone for your input. All the comments on componentry, suspension, weight, etc. were considered carefully.
When I got to the bike shop the newly built 19" Insight was waiting for me. Absolutely beautiful black and silver color. But the ride? While certainly fast and light, it did feel a little 'cheap' --- not as sturdy --- compared to my Sedona, which I'd brought along and used as a control model. It also felt very, very bumpy, which I hadn't noticed in the 17" version the day before (floor model already built - maybe the tires weren't inflated as much?)
Here the dialogue with the LBS owner began, as to whether it made more sense to try to make the Insight more comfortable by adding a suspended seat to the bike and maybe padded bike pants to me, or to try to make the Sedona lighter by changing tires, stem, handlebars, and so on (fork was out of the question due to cost). The shop owner even offered to swap out skinnier tires for the price of the tires only, to see if that would be enough to make the Sedona useable.
Cogitating on all this, I asked if there was any other possibility we hadn't considered. Well of course there was the Cypress DX, which I'd nixed yesterday, after thinking it probably wasn't significantly lighter than the Sedona. The owner confirmed it might not be light enough for my needs, but invited me to take it for a spin anyway, if only to rule it out.
Well....I fell totally in love. It fit me perfectly, handled like a dream, was very easy to pedal, and has the same cushy no-bone-rattles ride as the Sedona. Not as heavy-duty cushy as the Sedona of course, but certainly good enough for the roads and state park trails. To top it off, it's the most beautiful silver color.
Note to Tom Bombadil: you told me so!!!! I remember you and few other folks suggesting the Cypress before I purchased the Sedona, but at the time I thought I'd better go with the Comfort model. Hindsight is 20-20. I'm not sorry I tried the Sedona, but I'm so happy with the Cypress now. It's not quite as light as I hoped to go, but it's a big improvement in so many other ways, I'm thrilled.
Thanks again for your thoughts and input.
