What are the best brands of cycling shorts to buy. Wool vs spandex?

If you're a Classic & Vintage kind of person--wool with a real leather chamois.

Otherwise, spandex (or lycra) is much easier to find, cheaper, and easier to wash :) .

I have found the Pace brand of shorts to be the most durable. Sometimes sold through Performance and Nashbar. Their factory and discount store are in Orange County, Southern Cal.

Be careful of the sizing with Pace shorts. I got a pair that were supposed to be mediums and they were quite tight - more like a small/medium! They also didn't have flat-lock seams!

I wear UnderArmour compression shorts, and a pair of Eastbay nylon running shorts on top.

The compression shorts "compress", and also wick moisture (hey! it's South Effing Florida, and it's Summertime!)

No padding... but no slipping/seams against my groin, either. An additional plus is the perceived modesty value -- I can go into Publix or the public library, and nobody stares at (the bulge in) my crotch :innocent:

I have wool jerseys and a wool pair of shorts from VintageVelos.com, but I only wear them below about 60F down to about 25F. They do have an insert, but it is not a leather chamois. Above 60F (for me, but I've read the cut off is about 75F), it becomes too warm for the wool as it seems to hold the heat more. Then I wear regular cycling clothes: Campagnolo, Descente and Pearl Izumi jerseys and Assos and Sugoi bibs.

Forgot to mention about wool:

When you do wash them, use Kookaburra Wool Wash (http://www.kookaburra.com/ I think). I have a relative who has a shop for knitting and weaving supplies and she swears by the stuff. Regular soaps eventually break down the natural oils in the wool and this stuff helps to maintain it.

• Sizes up to XXXXL on most products (Hey, not all cyclists weigh 145lbs)

I have 2 pairs of regular shorts and 5 pairs of the Pro shorts and I love them.

If you want quality- and you can fit the things by being tall and thin- then Assos. they are fantastic but expensive.

Only problem is that if you try them on- you will not be looking at any other shorts- they are comfortable.

I have several different brands, and I can't really tell the difference. It's the upper layers that I have strong preferences for.
