Does it matter if the dust caps are missing from my mtb's cranks? I think they are dust caps--or are they just cosmetic?

If they're threaded then they are part of a self-extraction system. If not, they're mostly there to keep crud away from the bolt. I would keep them on, but if you lose one it's not a big deal.
