Hi all,

I live in the UK, but I'm coming over to New York for a short break. As the exchange rate is fairly favourable, I'm going to get stocked up on some mountain bike gear.

Can anyone recommend a good shop - if possible in manhattan...

Many thansk

If you happen to read this, try Toga Bikes on the Upper East Side on First Ave at 63rd st. Great guys, lots of stuff (mainly Performance, but does stock other brands, including folders...)

Don't they carry Specialized only?

OP, what kind of mtb stuff are you looking for? Have you tried www.nycmtb.com? They have a forum as well.

NYC bike shops can be pretty badly stocked and with a narrow range and the websites usually suck. The average Evans or Cycle Surgery is much better equipped, but more expensive. If you have something specific in mind, either get them to order it in or order it online and have it sent to your hotel.

You can also leave the isle o' Manhattan to find some good bike shops that stock more mtb stuff.

Toga on the West Side carries Specialized, Giant and Cannondale, so I would think all their stores do.

When I stopped by the Toga on the UES after it opened, it was Specialized only.

Sorry, my bad..I meant "specialized" not performance. Thanks. when I was there, they had the Dahon Speed D7 on display and for sale, and they said they were also an authorized retailer for Dahon, so I dunno.....

You might also consider NYC craigslist.

If you want to experiment in 'bicycle arbitrage' you might buy a 60's Moulton Mini in the UK and try to sell it in the NYC.

You might consider buying fancy and easy to transport parts on the net and paying for next day delivery to your hotel.

As to shops I like Bicycle Habitat, located in an area tourists might want to go to anyway.

+1 for NYC Velo and Sid's. Great shops.

Also if you are in Queens check out Spin Cycle on Queens Blvd.

Im used to going to the local bike shops uptown near my place, went to Sid's yesterday and was amazed. Mainly by the prices but they sell everything you want/need, and more.

Check out Tread Bike shop on Dyckman St. Way uptown in Inwood. Good shop and a lot of their customers are mountain bikers.

Another vote for NYC Velo. Great shop, run by a bunch of MTBers. Really, the coolest, most laid-back shop you're going to find.
