Hello!
I'm going to venture for the first time into the world of rollers! My two choices right now are Minoura with Al rollers, or Tacx sportroller 1200 with poly rollers. Anyone have any experience or opinions on either of these two?
Cheers!

used the Tacx. prefer poly rollers as they don't become as slipery when you start sweating all over them......
can lead to some...........humourous.................memories for those watching you...

I use Kreitler rollers (the best rollers available) and they are the aluminum model. Slipperiness should not be a problem if they are set up correctly as the rollers should be ahead of where you are dripping anyway. The drums also have small micro grooves in them that help with traction so no need to worry about slipping. Aluminum also last longer than poly as they do not deform over time.
ahh forgot to add, Aluminium drums eat tyres for breakfast
well I've never had my tires eaten by the Alu rollers.
I have an older Minoura and my wife has Tacx polys.
The Alu are smoother, but the poly has more of a road
feel.
One other good thing, the Poly rollers don't dent if you
drop something on em.

Our maintenance guy at work (we use indusrtial rollers for moving very heavy pieces of wood) suggests poly as he says they last longer than Al, because Al is softer. He also says that Al produces static and should be grounded for saftey! He said a spark might not happen very often but hope your not around a fuel source like a propane bbq when it does :) I'm still not sure :(

I've been happy with my Tacx poly rollers.
I bought them cheap and they work well :)

I've got between 4000 - 5000 k on my tires that I use with my aluminum rollers and have not had one problem with them wearing out. I think that is a myth. Poly rollers will warp before you have any problems with aluminum rollers. Kreitler rollers are regarded as the best in the business and they don't make any poly rollers at all. You decide. They are more expensive but worth every penny as far as I am concerned. A lifetime guarantee backs up their product as well and unlike many companies they get nothing but rave reviews for their standing behind the product the produce.
I have kreitlers. I use my road bike on the rollers 2x/week. No excessive wear on the tires. No slipping or sweat on the rollers.
The kreitlers come in three different drum dia's. The smaller the diameter, the more resistance. So if you buy for example the middle 3.25" dia, it pretty well simulates the road/wind experience. I have the 3.25 dia rollers and at 90% max HR sustained effort for 20 minutes, I am using the exact same gear that I use on the road.

I also use the Killer Headwind Fan which is the most aptly named piece of equipment I have ever seen! What a great addition to a set of rollers.
I rode a friend's PVC rollers once and got quite a few electric shocks.
Riding normal-sized rollers is too easy so you need a resistance unit. The rollers w/o them that provide resistance by using small diameter rollers do it by wearing your tires. Think about it, the resistance has to come from somewhere.
I haven't experienced accelerated tire wear with my standard Kreitler rollers or any electric shocks.
