i want to switch out my ultegra cranks for something lighter like the centaur carbon cranks
is this possible with the ultegra shifter and derailleur?

It is possible but you may not like the results. Drivetrains and gearsets are optimized for each gruppo. The chain you are using may not like your new front setup with your current front derailleur/shifter combo.

Should be no problem.

Alot of bike comes with non-group cranks.

Do third party suppliers like FSA or Stronglight make Campy or Shimano specific cranks/chainrings? Will work.

shimano is usually 130 bcd and campy is 135bcd... as long as the bolt patterns are the same u should be fine... fsa and shimano tend to be interchangeable depending on the crank application... compact is 110 bcd seems to be standard all around...

just check bcds and make sure that the chainrings match

You have 2 options here. If you want to go carbon you can use a Campagnolo crank and BB. They shifting will be good but really the tooth profiles are cut for the Campagnolo chain.

Fulcrum has introduced new cranks that are designed to be Shimano compatible (using the Campagnolo BB). These cranks are built using Campagnolo technology but not the same molds (I am 100% positive about this for 2 reasons. I did a side by side comparison and I directly asked the Fulcrum people when they showed them to me). The bolt pattern on these cranks is the Campagnolo pattern so you will have to continue to use the Fulcrum rings down the line (or the Campagnolo rings).

You could also go FSA but make sure to buy a spare BB.

thanks for all the replies guys.
im gonna look into this and try to make the change in the most cost effective way. i kinda knew i would've needed a new bottom bracket but i was concerned about the shifting with the indexing on the shifter and whatnot. so i should get new chain too then right?
guess it should be ok.

Shifting, indexing and whatever will be fine. You only need a new chain if the old one is cooked. How many bikes have those Ultegra cranks anyway? Most have Truvativ or FSA. Nania seems to have swallowed the marketing. Sure, Shimano and Campagnolo will optimise differently, but they are aiming for the same thing; fast shifting.

Stronglight and FSA do make different rings for the two, but this is due to the bcd, not the shifting or chain compatibility!
