My LBS seems to be having trouble finding any of their suppliers to provide a Tiagra group for me to upgrade an older touring bike.

Any ideas on where I can help them look to locate a good source for a reasonable sourcing for a group?

I don't want to spring for the higher end groups that they could find quickly...

They can find bits and pieces here and there, but can't sem to get a whole group together, and they seem to be working for me here to get a group price instead of prices for individual components.

Any other ideas for compromises to keep cost down while keeping similar quality?

I don't want to deal with the hassle of selling a BikesDirect frame etc. ;)

It seems easier to find Sora than Tiagra. Usually on ebay Tiagra is more readily available. Good luck

I don't like Sora shifting because of the inability to downshift in the drops... Otherwise, Sora did occur to me.

Even though I will be on the hoods most of the time, I think the inability to downshift in the drops would bug me... even though it wouldn't be a real impact often enough that I should let it be a show stopper.

I think Quality Bike Parts is the standard, but I don't know about an actual "group." You can start here though, and build it from parts:

Have you ever ridden a Sora group? I've been riding Campy for a while. Even with small hands, I have no problem reaching the thumb levers.

You want Tiagra? I'm interested in this frame (and maybe a handful of the parts):

Perhaps we can go in together on an offer? Or I can 'pre-buy' the frame from you? PM me if interested...
