My neck consistenly hurts when I ride my bike. Should I
1. Raise te gooseneck?
2. Get a longer stem?

I appreciate your advice

raise + shorter stem = more upright = made my neck quit hurting. I have injured it in the past though, and have a small amount of lingering pain normally off the bike.

what kind of bike is it anyways?? road and MB are different set ups. If u have a 50 bucks bike there is no way to fix that (sorry for been an AH but thats the cruel reality)

If u have a road bike 1st of all if the stem is going up try putting it backwards, going down. this will make the ride less twichtching.

Secondly Probably the stem is too short?

3rd check the seat position. probably is going down instead of flat? what kind of seat do you have one of those super foammy ones??? probably with suspension??? those ones simply don't work! because u have no support in your back. with seats u have to spend money, sorry.

4th probably send a picture of the bike will help a lot, and one with you riding it will help even more.

Cya.

Sometimes it's tension. I noticed that when we first started riding our tandem, the extra concentration and concern for my stoker made me very tense. After a few hundred miles, I was just fine and my neck pain went away. Of course, it could be a poor fit, too.

For most riders (assuming that we're talking about a road bike) you're looking at two rules of thumb:

Top of hendlebar about level with seat.
Stem long enough so that center of handlebar "hides" the front hub when you're riding.

Assuming that the bike is reasonably well fitted, and that you're reasonably fit, you shouldn't be having neck pain.

if I fit my bike like Kotts suggests, then I will be way up in the wind and go over the bar all the time.

Bike fit is very individual. Just "my neck hurts" is not enough data to make a reasonable suggestion, other than "try changing some stuff, see if it helps".
