Found a nice 2000 Eddy Merckx Strada on Craig'sList. Great. Question: Any opinions on whether race-oriented Eddy positioned his fd braze-on to allow for setting up a 30 inner ring triple crank? Or maybe even a compact? My aging knees hope that he did.

man i love merckx geometry. i'd run a compact and a bigger cassette were it me. but i detest triples and in fact am running only one chain ring now on my bike .

I have no problem with a compact (nor any hatred of triples, either...not at 60 y.o.)....but, will the 2000 pre-compact braze-on allow me to position the fd to make that shift down to a 34 inner ring?
A standard triple has a 52t big ring so compared to a double there should be little if any difference in the height of the derailleur. Going from a double to a triple you'll need the triple crankset, compatible bottom bracket, compatible shifters, and both front and rear triple derailleurs.
