I just finished installing a wheel with Nexus 8 internal gear hub on my commuter last night. After struggle to get the shift cable connected properly to the hub, then using zip-ties to secure the cable to the frame, I'm standing back and wondering how I'm ever going to remove the wheel on the side of the road in the event of a flat. I envision either a struggle to remove the shift cable from the hub, or cutting zip ties to give me slack to work with the wheel off of the frame. Is there some trick that I'm missing?

Not as far as I know. I've been meaning to get a wrench for the nuts (no rear quick release on most IGH bikes), and it's a pain to get the cable off by hand, but I can just manage it. I suppose if you have to carry a wrench anyways you might as well carry a little pair of pliers for grabbing the end of the cable.

For me, I went out and got some flat-resistant tires the first time I had to take the back wheel off.
