Was gunna say Cliff Burton as well.

I immediately thought of the riff he did on their cover of "Higher Ground."

Flea is always good, but Chris Wolstenholme from Muse is also awesome.
Muse, 'Hysteria' is one of my fave bass lines ever.

Nah, no peace for Cliff. If there is a heaven, he's probably too busy making music to be all peaceful and serene. He, Jimi, and Dimebag must be kicking out some nice tunes.
Although, Janis, Jim, and Syd are probably doing some peaceful strung out Hippie stuff.
Red Hot Chili Peppers, any song. Flea can play bass.
Beat me to it. Best reason to listen to RHCP is Flea. They're cool live, too, my indie snob friends can kiss my rear, Freaky Styley is an awesome album.
Oh yeah, and Higher Ground... shweet. Which album was that? I'm pretty sure I lost my copy :(

"Soul To Squeeze" has to be one of his best. Pretty basic, but has such an awesome groove.

Death From Above 1979's only album feature only a bass guitar and drums. some of it was pretty wicked.
also transmission by joy division.
Sunshine of Your Love - Jack Bruce
I'm going to say "Peace Frog" The Doors--Morrison Hotel
The Doors actually didn't have a bass player, Ray Manzarek played most of the bass lines on his Farfisa organ, and / or they hired a bassist for studio sessions. Leroy Vinegar, a great jazz bassist, played on some of their stuff. I'll check my old LP and let you know....
:)
Yup. Hell of an actor too :D

you know I, as a former bass player, am partial to a certain bass player...still recognizing the greats like Flea, Stanley Clark, Jaco Pastorius, Jack Bruce and others... Nevertheless, give a listen to Something by The Beatles (a George Harrison song) and listen to the bass line by Paul McCartney. Under appreciated for sure as a bassist.
Props to Bootsy Collins
But John Entwistle has always been my overall favorite.

David J (Bauhaus) - Bella Lugosi's Dead
Peter Hook (Joy Division) - Transmission
Herbie Flowers . Take A Walk On The Wild Side
Nathan Watts? . Master Blaster (Jammin')

Many good bassists, (and organist) listed, but my vote goes to anything by Victor Wooten. If interested go to YouTube and you will be blown away. Check out the bass-guitar slap battle for starters

Terrible sound quality. Probably didn't do it justice.
Anything by Rush until the 90's. Didn't have quite the same stuff in later albums but still great. Stuff like "Limelight" and pretty much the entire "Signals" album just drill it into your head. Fleas Hump de Bump, Warlocks, and Tell me Baby from the last record should tell anyone who the man is.
Early RHCP's if you can find them anymore are top notch. Seen them live in the 80's, 90's and 2000's. Not much better live.
Plus the guy from Tool. Can never remember his name but holy cow.

We're talking specific basslines here, not bassists, right? Songs where the bassline itself carries the song and is the memorable part of the music. The few that pop into mind straight away are:
Talking Heads' version of "Take Me To The River"
Queen's "Another One Bites The Dust"
Anything by Primus, like "Jerry Was A Race Car Driver" or "My Name Is Mud"
There are more that will pop into my head later, I'm sure.
Ok, specific bass lines. Real Me from the Quadrophenia album. this song is the bass line.

Another one of my favorites is The Brothers Johnson - Get the Funk Outta My Face. It isn't very technical, but it sure is effective.

I immediately thought of the riff he did on their cover of "Higher Ground."+1, he's a real nice guy too.The riff on Young MC's Bust A Move was pretty good as well.
Bootsy Collins knows how to play too.
Best results are achieved by turning this one up to 11.why not just make 10 louder?

+100000 to Stanley Clarke. But also Roy Garrison- a true master.
But for a real thrill, check out Lonnie Liston Smith's Expansions (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9dmX2uhQrZs). (In case you're wondering, that's a small triangle solo in the first four measures.) One of the most demanding bass ostinato figures in all of jazz, played by one of the very best bassists in the history of jazz, Cecil McBee. I was so incredibly fortunate to have seen the Cosmic Echoes at the old Bijou in Philly- we sat about three feet from McBee- what a mesmerizing experience that was!

I heard Stu Hamm once in concert (G3: Joe Satriani, Eric Johnson, Steve Vai). No specific riffs, but the guy turns bass into a sound of its own, not just a heartbeat there for support.

Whoever he was, that is. He was the first bass player in Metallica. Killed in a tour bus crash, IIRC.

Oh THAT guy. Oh okay. Oops. :o Don't listen to Metallica much. I only agreed with Mich because I owed him one.
