Hello, all. I just got back from 5 days in absolute heaven. Six of us went up to Sun Valley/Ketchum, ID and the Sawtooth Mountains near Stanley, ID to mountain bike. Stanley, ID is a very remote, rustic Western town of about 100 people, about an hour’s drive each way from anything. It’s cut off from the world during winter. Ketchum was a nut house, way too many people; but would be fun if you like to shop and drink expensive coffee drinks.
We did a total of 57 miles in 3 days. Sun Valley’s trails were really deep with dry dirt, hence very difficult. We all had a map of the area, yet we somehow overlooked the “Expert” rating of the trail. It was Placer Creek to Castle Creek trail on Warm Springs Road. We’re calling it “Whoop Ass” Creek, because it was seriously the hardest thing I’ve ever ridden (and pushed my bike up too!). I fell down a steep 30-foot ravine to the river because I didn’t clip out in time on this really sketchy section. Little road rash is all and some rocks in my shorts. Also did Red Warrior Creek later that day. My friend got a big cut on her leg that was definitely stitch worthy, but she was having too much fun to waste time at the ER, so she bought a deep cut wound kit.
Sawtooth biking was much better. We rode Knapp Creek to Valley Creek. Much easier trail, all modified ATV trail, which is now closed to ATVs. The highlight of the trip was Fisher Creek to Williams Creek loop. The most absolute, sweetest downhill single track I’ve ever ridden, nearly 10 miles of it through gorgeous mountain scenery.
Good friends, good weather, free camping everywhere, eating lots of food, drinking beer, and to top the whole trip off, we soaked in (free) natural hot springs every night. They were all right off the road. Hardly any people were there at all. Also we swam at Redfish Lake and laid out on the beach with the Sawtooth Mountains right there. I’m still in absolute heaven.
Definitely one of my top 3 vacations of all time!
