Mine was Nortel. I watched it collapse from over $100 per share down to $30. Steal right? That's when I decided to buy. Little did I know the tech bubble was still inflated. If you don't take into account the reverse split 1:10 they recently did, the stock is now worth approx $1.60 :o
I bought a 23" Apple Cinema HD Display a while back. The computer I bought it for croaked a few weeks later. Zing!
As for the stock market, wouldn't touch it with a 42-foot pie pole.

I guess I've been pretty lucky with what I have been getting into *crosses fingers* :o
I was married. Does that count?
Oh, and SHE lost $15,000 on the stock market in 6 months - without my knowledge. Was one of 100 things that contributed to our eventual separation.

Yahoo.
The stock went up by a factor of like 10.
So what's the problem?
I didn't sell.

What kind of a return on your investment were you looking for?

A pump'n'dump OTC stock with ticker BBAN. Got a hot tip when it was at $4. Didn't act until it was at $8. Me and my coworkers sunk thousands. It quickly plummeted to a penny stock and the perpetrator fled the country. This was around year 2000 not surprisingly.
Well, he said his name was Tatiana and he looked like a woman, that is all I am willing to say.

yikes...
with that said, probably the 2 1/2 years of college that i got nothing for. However I also believe it has helped me get the last two jobs ive applied for, mostly the math/science/engineering skills. I start a new job monday, after 2 months of being unemployed and lazy.
so i guess my ex girlfriend was the worst investment. I didnt even really buy her anything LOL (current gf I bought a bike for this summer). She was definitely a waste of over a year of on and off...what can ya do?

Thanks Siu
I'd buy or rescue an interesting old car, spend up to lots of money on it just to get it going/keep it going, then sell it for a similar amount that I paid for it.
Still I've had lots of fun, and learned (more or less) how to do basic mechanical work.
The only cars that I have made money were; a 1960s Bedford campervan that got rear ended and I got over double what I paid in insurance proceeds and selling the van:eek:, and a very poorly hand painted Nissan Sunny that I paid $280 for, drove for 1200km, and then sold for $300.00.
Old cars can be very deep money pits, but, when they are working, are quite fun.
An eightball of meth. I did it up instead of selling it.
About 9-10 years ago, I bought a full darkroom kit. Cost the equivalent of US$1200 at the time. I'm not sure, but I think the total number of prints I've made using it is something like 200...
And now, with digital having taken over completely, it's not worth anything...

my worst investment was FuncoLand (anyone remember them?)
I wouldn't have a clue. Haven't touched the stuff in over 20 years.
I gave $100,000 to Larry Craig's campain fund. :(

I bought it too, after the price collapsed. I think my average cost ended up being around $28/ share. I am part of the class action versus Nortel but expect to only recover pennies on the dollar.

I bought a 1974 30ft Pacemaker Cabin Cruiser. I put over $25,000 into it. New engines and electronics, new interior... It was fun for a while, but what a money pit.

1974 FIAT 124 Spider.
Was a lot of fun...but something wrong with it everytime you turned around. Was more of a money pit than an investment.
I leased a car once. Oh yeah, that was in marriage #1. Took a bath on the whole deal.

Paid for my ex's education (Tech Writing, Comp TIA Web Master) and she never worked a day we were together. She works in a call center for a credit collections agency now. Yep, excellent use of her skill set.
Put several thousand into a local company, ClearOne Communications/Gentner, when shares were at about 37.00 and company was still moving up. Shortly thereafter the CEO is investigated by the SEC and shares dropped to under 3.00 and the company eventually folded. Lesson learned.
However, I put about 150.00 into Subway stock back in the late '80's when I first started college just on a whim with some friends of mine and put in about 100.00 worth of shares each year for the next few years. I bought my Land Rover with cash in 2001 just with that investment. Stock had flattened out about that time.

You know what I meant. For example, essentially all cars are not investments, they are money pits. Even the purchase of a house is debatable, a wise purchase yes, but not always an investment.

Got slightly burned on a pump and dump penny stock about 6 years ago; only lost about 10%. Actually didn't follow a 'hot tip' but bought in on based on other facts. Bought it the day it took off, thought I made a great investment at a bargain price but the next day the pumper's cashed out and the stock was back where it started. After looking up a bunch of message boards, it was a pump and dump. Wish I'd still owned the stock, up over 600% since then...
:D
My pretty little white Sunbird with the flip up headlights. Why do I mention the flip up lights, because that was the selling point to me. I saw nothing else but a clean little sporty kinda car. And it had a "new" motor in it with less than 25,000 - well hell - that baby was mine!!! And phooey on the naysayers who said I shouldn't, etc etc.
:D
OK, so when I really drove the car more --- I actually had to put a pillow on the seat to boost me up - what the heck - why are all the seats so ... low. And they conveniently left alllll paperwork about the car in the glove compartment - as well as their own.
I discovered ...
All three were extremely heavy, and the kid had pimples (no wonder the seats were concave). That they had had 4 horns replaced, had lots of warranty work done on the engine till it finally blew (not saying a word about hauling their butts around), had engine number 1 replaced with rebuilt (engine number 2). Got into a car accident that took out the front end, enter rebuilt engine number 3. I replaced all the stuff that would normally need replacing at 80-120M miles --- radiator, pumps and other stuff too - ignition, etc - most everything else under the hood as far as I was concerned.
And then the cute little flip up headlights died.

You just caught me in a weird mood today. And yes I know what you meant. That not all purchases are investments and that many will decline in value, or cost more to maintain than they will increase in value. But that's not what you said, so I decided to give you a little crap for it.....no malice intended.

Sounds like we had a similar experience. I am part of the Nortel II class action suit. I also expect to recover only pennies on the dollar. I still have a few shares left. I'm hoping that Mike Zafiroski can turn things around. Thanks for the post. At least I know I'm not alone ;)
I put my life's savings in penny stocks.
