I have an Epi SG with a set of EMG humbucker pickups, that gets played through a five-watt Epiphone Valve Junior tube amp. I also have a Washburn acoustic-electric that gets played through a Washburn acoustic amp. For effects, I have a Digitech RP 300 that does everything and rarely gets used other than for reverb, delay and chorus. Other stuff around includes an upright piano, a drumset, and my Dad's Washburn.

It's a Tube 12a model. You can get one for about $100 street price.

So basically a Strat Paul?

It's doable....many guitarmakers have fixed neck strat variants (bottom routed, but that can be dealt with), just get a raw pickguard (cut it into a 4-knob HH w/ 3-way switch or 5-way coil tap modded switch), slap some PAFs in them and rock on.

Personally, I want to see a rear routed H/S/H strat (railbuckers and a dano for the single), 21-fret neck-through build, spalted maple top, poplar body, maple neck with ebony fingerboard, wilkinson floating tremolo, brass nut and a nice fat steel slug hidden inside of the headstock for that extra smidge of sustain. Oh, and almost forgot, individial switches for each pickup.

Wasn't there a "post your guitars" thread just a couple months ago?

Eh, here I go again:

http://img515.imageshack.us/img515/131/guitars32om3.jpg

My modest collection (from top to bottom)

- Yamaha SE200 (circa 1985) modified with (3) Seymour Duncan Vintage Rails pickups, LSR linear-pull tuning machines, & a Schaller bridge.

- Vox Phantom (circa 1967) in piss-poor shape, with a custom (sic) paint job, missing (1) pickup, missing the spring & handle from the Bigsby tailpiece, missing the original pickup selector knob, and in desperate need of a re-fret. I keep this set up in Nashville tuning for studio work.

- Paul Reed Smith CE24MT (circa 1998 or 99)

- Roland G-303 (circa 1985) modified with a Bill Lawrence humbucker (with coil cut switch) in the neck position, and a Kahler whammy bar. And yes, I have the blue GR-300 synth module that goes with this guitar!

- Ibanez AF-75 (circa 2006)

The funny thing is: I'm a bass player. One of these days I'll get around to photographing that collection.

To fit 24, you'd lose the single coil though...otherwise the scale length would be wrong. That's the reason why the super high fretcount guitars tend to usually have just one pickup (like some of the 27-fret monsters of last decade).

Yup, a Strat Paul. I think it would play kinda like an SG, which would be good, as LP's are too heavy for me. And Strats are a sexy shape, but I can't live with the wood choice, or the bolt on neck.

Hey, I'm allowed to buy whatever guitar I want - I happen to like that one and the sound on some of the cheaper warlocks I tried (my friend, Eric - guitar god) sound pretty decent.

Another cool thing - with the NT Warlock I get the dual humbuckers, and ORIGINAL FLOATING FLOYD ROSE TREMOLO bridge - all that sweet stuff, coming to a price of just $500 w/o tax, at my lms.

"To each his own".

Thinking about it, if you don't mind the 2x3 headstock and 24-frets, get a Dean Vendetta 3.0 or 4.0 and mod it for the extra volume and pot....if you don't mind a maple neck though.

A vendetta 3.0 is set-neck, a 4.0 is neck-through (neck extends MUCH further into the body than a regular set neck), both have dual humbuckers (easily swappable for PAFs), carved top (sorry no pickguards, but it does look sexy as hell), one volume, one tone, 3-way switch. All of them are mahogany body.

The guitar I have is a 1.0 model, bolt-on neck, 3-piece mahogany body. It's the only guitar I own that I haven't modified (I did install straplocks, but I don't consider that a mod).

That is the most sensible thing you have ever said on this site.

BUT

What's it made out of? And which humbuckers? Lots of "dual humbuckers" are crap, even in that price range. Even if they sound good now, they may start buzzing after a few months. Are they active or passive? And you know the Floyd Rose is gonna be impossible to keep in tune, right?

Strat-Pauls were the mainstay of 80's metal !!!!

The long-short scale neck is an important issue in
playing style preference.....
A longer scale, Strat type neck has a different sound
because of string tension stuff...Some of a Gibsons chunk
can be attributed to the shorter scale that doesnt have to be
tuned wth as much tension to reach A440.

I had 2 Richs...a Bich and a Seagull. Real ones from the 80's.
I got them for my Wife because they looked cool. Awsome
finishes but the necks sucked and the sound was too Ibanez
nasal-y

The Strat neck is the one thing I like from the Strat. I still find it hard to believe that they can charge $1000+ for a guitar with a bolt on neck, that feels like a toy compared to a mahogany Gibson/Epi

Gibson Epi is the most underrated guitar going, currently.
I like Strats/Teles myself and like the bolt-on for a few different
reasons but would still like another black Les Paul Standard :p
A Mex-0-Caster is only about 350.00 and really no different
from a 1000.00 one in terms of useability.

Tell me about it. I got an arctic white SG with a set neck and active EMG pickups for under $800 Canadian.
I'd pay 350 for one maybe, but I'm not paying anything near $1000 for a set neck guitar.

Agreed, Fender makes great necks.

Let me elaborate on the necks on the Vendetta series. The neck is designed primarily for speed....low-profile frets, thinner profile "C" neck, dead straight neck profile.

The Dean "Hardtail" is their more classically inspired strat type guitar. It has a stopbar tailpiece, and only has 22 frets: http://www.deanguitars.com/hardtail.php

There is also an import version of the Hardtail http://www.deanguitars.com/hardtail_s.htm.
