I am seriously considering changing out my wheelset, tell me what you think.

I ride an 03' Enduro frame that I built up. I decided to go with handbuilt Sun Rhyno Lite XL disc rims with XT hubs - weigth 2350 grams! I have been running Panaracer FireXC Pros in a size 2.1.

I weight a fit 210 lbs and ride aggresive XC/all-mountain - whatever it is called at this moment. I am aggresive, but keep the drops to under 2 feet. Coming from a set of Mavic 222's I noticed a big difference in weigth on the new wheels. Now the Rhyno's have been pretty bomb proof but I was thinking of switching over to some Mavic X317 w/XT hubs - 2010 grams. The new setup would save me about 300+ grams.

Would the 300+ grams make a noticeable difference in my ride, especially uphill. Keep in mind I am not a weight weenie, but I would like to maximize my pedaling power. Or do you have any recommendations, something around 200-250.

Thanks-

1 pound on the wheels is 3 pounds on the frame! Rotating weight makes a HUGE difference. You'll accelerate faster and use less energy in the long run. I wish my wheels were a bit lighter.. I was thinking of going with a set of Crossmax's until all this **** came up lately.

300gr is a hefty amount of weight to save off . But i am very sceptic about the X317 rim. I am exactly the same weight as you are, 210lbs, 6ft3" riding aggro-xc/lightFR/allmountain etc etc etc. I suppose that the F219 rims are the way to go.

Yeah, I'd be skeptical of any lightweight wheels. I personally could get away with running super light wheels with no problems because I'm a light rider, although agressive. But if you're fairly agressive and a pretty big guy, I'd say go for something a littler tougher.

Jim311 is right about this, at 210 you want a little more wheel than someone who's 155. Shaving 300 grams at the wheels will make a noticeable difference in climbing. If you do go with a light wheel you may have to run a little higher pressure in your tires to ensure you dont damage the rims on even a 2' drop.

you could always try contacting Mavic by email or something and ask. You never know, they might be able to help you.
