Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Not for me. I have a hard time at rides with kids and too many unexperienced riders. Not to be snobbish, just safe. I almost died 6 times on the LA Marathon ride!
A relaxed ride and ice cream sounds fabulous! Unfortunately, I'm already roped into a ride for this Sunday. I think something along these lines would make for a great BF social ride sometime.

If anybody wants to eat ice cream and then ride up a hill (http://midnightridazz.com/viewStory.php?storyId=705) on Saturday night (the 20th), be at Scoops, on Heliotrope just north of Melrose, at 6:00 PM. At 7:00 we're going to ride up to the Observatory, so as to have a good view of the Lights Out LA (http://www.lightsoutla.org/) event--either its stunning success or its stunning failure, we don't care which.
This is not a True Roadie ride, but all are welcome.

The Ice Cream Century!
:D
Well, we did talk about the Baskin Robbins 31 repeats of Torrey Pines! :p
A century takes too long. Leaves too little time for ice cream. I was thinking more like 5-20 miles. Leaves more time for ice cream.

How about 30'ish so that some of the recreational wimmins can come out too?:D

YAY.
I neglected to mention it in the ride calendar listing, but riders are encouraged to wear black, use the darkest-colored bikes they feel comfortable riding up a hill, and mask up with black bandannas if they have them (they're, like, two bucks at any army surplus store). It wouldn't be an LA urban social bike ride without a sickeningly cute theme.

Well, I rode over to Scoops this evening at 7:30, didn't see anyone that looked like they were waiting around to do the ride, so I sat on that log out in front of Bicycle Kitchen til a little after 8. I saw just a few riders milling around the bike shop and it didn't look like the ride was going to materialize so I decided to take off....back home.

EDIT: Boy, I feel so dumb! The ride took off at 7pm....I should have asked someone instead of sitting around there like a moron.:o

Too bad you missed the ride! I wonder if there was anything to see? You know, if anyone actually turned out their lights?

Well, that was not my intention but I ended up doing that. Somehow I had 8:00 stuck in my mind although I saw the ride calendar with the 7pm departure time. Geez, I felt like an idiot later on in the evening when I found out I actually missed the ride. Anyway, while waited I watched a couple of other posers in front of the kitchen do their tricks on their freeride rigs. That kitchen is a real neat place. That was my first time there. :)

Do you work on your bike yourself? You must live midway between the Oven in Highland Park and the Kitchen in Hollywood...

Do you work on your bike yourself? You must live midway between the Oven in Highland Park and the Kitchen in Hollywood...Yeah, I live on the northernmost perimeter of Elysian Park so I'm basically in the middle of both locations. The Oven might be even closer as I can easily ride down the dirt trail to Stadium Way, down to Riverside, which turns into Figueroa. And yes, I do my own work. :)

Do you have a stand and tools? I'm just learning mechanics with no real plans to get all that stuff anytime soon so the Oven works out really well for me.
And it's a fun hangout...:p

Todos.....including wheel building stand. I think my tinkering time sometimes surpasses my riding time. :p
If the Oven works out for you there's really no need to invest in bike specific tools. But if you have the room it's always nice to have a simple repair stand to make those quick look overs and adjustments.

We all gathered at the south wall of the observatory lawn at 8:00 with our delicious boxed wine and awaited the darkening of the lights.
We didn't see a single light go out.
As one of our riders pointed out, at least Los Angeles is consistent.
It was fun anyway.
