Kia ora !
This web-site was initially set up in October 2007 in Christchurch, New Zealand to post the responses to a questionnaire designed to raise awareness of and elicit opinions from candidates in Local Government Elections on the issue of urban utility cycling .
I have since created some more pages with lots of links which I hope will provide a useful resource for councils, organizations, companies or individuals wanting to promote or take up utility cycling in the New Zealand context. If you're aware of any utility cycling related initiatives happening in New Zealand,-or Australia , please let us know.

Ka kite ano.

Interesting to see the video on ultility cycling in Kyoto Alan. I must agree with you regarding the availability of utility bicycles here in NZ as most of my own utility bicycles are English and are at least 40 years old.
Some of the old Morrisons are a good basis for a utility bike, but quite a bit needs to be done to them before they're really useful.

Basically they need the seat and handlebars changing as well as better mudguards; - though some models did have full length mudguards from new. Racks and a front basket would need to be fitted, but with care a conversion could be done at minimal expense as compared with buying a brand new bicycle. A tidy Morrison can be picked up for around $50-60; - the Morrison 'Concorde' I purchased recently was only $25.00 and after a clean and a service I'm using it most days for quick nips down the road to the shops.

Awesome website Alan, thanks!

I've been trying to find out who sells xtracycle stuff here in NZ for a while. Just sent an email off to Brian at Southend Cycles to get prices :) (I'm trying to decide between the xtracycle and the yuba mundo....)

I got the following lead from a Candidate in the Local Government Elections , Andy Clover in
Nelson in mid October.

"Thanks for that info and comment Alan.
Are you aware of this? www.xtracycle.com

A guy in nelson (Ted) is bringing them into the country for hauling a bit of gear around.
Andy "

- I don't know where you are but if you're in the South Island it might pay to follow this lead up by contacting the guys at xtracycle in California directly ( they've wrote to me last week ,-but not about the Nelson connection )
Thanks for the feedback and good luck with getting the right bike.
Caio for now.
