:D Wow!:D
I was really impressed with what I've been missing compared to my Trek 6000 MTB w/ semi-slicks. So light, so nimble, so fast! And this was on beginner bikes too!
I hit a local Bikeline out of curiosity today and road a Trek 1000. It was listed @ $659 and had Sora drivetrain. I didn't like the drivetrain at all, nor the seat, toeclips, but I was impressed with how it felt to ride a road bike again. My last roadbike was a "10-Speed" when was 16 probably...long time ago. I like it enough to take a Trek catalog to at least investigate the other options. A 1200 seemed like a smart bike to get at only ~800 compared to the starter 1000. Bike felt twitcht; lbs guys said it was due to the curved fork on the 1000; 1200 has a straiht Fork.
That visit took me to another store where I rode a Giant OCR2. It was $829 and came w/ all Tiagra drivetrain...MUCH better than the Trek's Sora. Downshifting was actually an option on this bike ;) I couldn't believe the hand contortions I had to do to downshift on the Sora based Trek. The Giant also had a GREAT saddle too, and Shimano clipless pedals which were great. I didn't spend too much time getting fitted, and just took out a Medium based on standing over the frame...there were a few inches of space there vs the ~1-2 on the 56cm Trek. Seemed a little uncomfortable getting out of the saddle, as in small. I did read someone's OCR review that the 2004 OCR2 has been upgraded to all 105 components as well. The Tiagra was a big upgrade over the Sora, bust some gears were still sticky.
I'm still gushing over this because of just how much more efficient these bike are compared to MTB's. Now I know why I'm passed with such ease!
In any case, I'm also saddened, part of the reason I got back into cycling was to get in better shape prior to some expected surgery on herniated thoracic discs in my back. I'm stuck using my Trek 6000 MTB on a trainer until I'm cleared to do anything "risky" in nature. If I do need surgery....i won't be doing any biking for months I imagine....and that's IF the surgery goes well.
Here's a weird thing/...ever since I started using the trainer...I've been waking up at 4AM...It's weird how much all of this cardio can affect the body...Guess I've been wasting my time lifting weights.
