Can be spekled like that or as Rondell as well. Origin is WWI British Air Corps. That's what they called them and the French and American flyers picked it up.

I've always heard it called "the star and bars." Works as a great position reference when flying formation....unless it's dark.

a Roundel

I thought a "roundel" was only the circular marker like the Brits and the French use. My understanding was that other countries could (and did) use them, albeit in different colors, but that it wasn't a "roundel" unless it was a colored dot with one or two concentric colored rings around it and no protruding bars ar nuthin' else.

That's not the Air Force logo... all US warplanes, of all branches, have the US roundel.

since we're talking about it, that one in particular was adopted in 1947 and is still in use on US Military aircraft that are not camouflaged or subdued.

The stars and bars usually refers to the confederate flag.

since we're talking about it, that one in particular was adopted in 1947 and is still in use on US Military aircraft that are not camouflaged or subdued.

Even then, if they use it, they'll often paint the roundel in the same camo/subdued colors as the rest of the aircraft.

According to wikipedia, it is a roundel. Never heard it called that in 23+ years of flying with them.

Back in the '70's my family lived in the Azores because my Dad got a two year job at Lajes Field working for the Air Force. Stationed at Lajes were Army, Navy, and Air Force personnel.

The Air Force operated the base, but had no aircraft stationed there.

The Navy had the aircraft (P-3 Orions).

The Army operated the docks and had all the watercraft.

The Air Force does have its own fleet for sub-scale drone recovery at Tyndall AFB in Florida. The roundel (a.k.a. the star and bars thing) looks rather odd on the orange and white colored boats. It's a small fleet but a fleet none the less.
