Hi everyone,
I'm planning a tour next summer--not sure where but an extended one, a month or more--my current bicycle is a Trek 412 (022 ishiwata tubing). Does anyone know if this bike would be suitable for touring (for instance, are the chainstays long enough for rear panniers?) I haven't given much thought to how much I will bring with me or anything like that as of yet (for one, I will need to upgrade the 6-spd cassette and possibly a third chain ring up front). I have heard the bike called a "sport touring" bicycle and the geometry seems suitable for this type of designation, but my main question is how this bicycle performs loaded... hopefully someone out there has done some touring on a trek 412 or a similar trek from the mid to late 80s. Right now I just don't have the funds to buy a touring bike.

Thanks,

Nick

"Sport Touring" means going with a seat or fanny pack and a van to carry your stuff to the next stop. A sport touring bike can be used for fully loaded touring, it just generally will not work as well as a purpose-built loaded tourer. See: www.bgcycles.com for hard core tourers. Use a small set of panniers set well back for week-ends. If fun get a better one.
