I am decidely a melody person. I can listen to a song for years and never bother to listen to the lyrics or learn what the song's about. To me, the notes tell the story. The song can mean anything I want it to -- happy, sad, angst, anger, aggression, a sense of humor...the notes set the mood for me.

Sometimes I don't even want to know the lyrics because I'm afraid they will have a different meaning. The Crash Test Dummies lyrics are a good example -- the notes and melody have so much depth and passion and a sense of importance...and the lyrics are just kinda silly.

Other times I am pleasantly surprised to finally pay attention to the lyrics and find they fit the melody. It's a bonus if the words describe an experience I can relate to. However, even when song lyrics sound to me like they are about to describe a feeling or a moment I once experienced, there is usually some point at which they detour, in which case I wish I didn't know what they were.

An example of this was a tune I was listening to tonight for the first time -- probably an old song -- by Weezer, called Pink Triangle. The lyrics I was able to make out on my drive home were " thought I had found the one...We were good as married in my mind...But married in my mind's no good." And I thought, YES, that is the perfect way to describe past feelings of unrequited live. And yet I get home and find the song is about the guy falling in love with a girl only to find out she's a lesbian. Still great lyrics, but not what I thought they were gonig to be.

Are you a lyrics person or a melody person?

Melody for sure. I've gotten all excited about a song that I found and made The Woman listen to it. She will then inform me that it is one of the worst/saddest/angriest songs she's ever heard.

Lyrics, I guess that's why I enjoy Gilbert and Sullivan.

I enjoy listening to instrumentals way more than the lyrics ... usually. Most lyrics are not worth the paper they're written on. Having said that, there are some rare lyrics that are amazing.

Melody. Though songs which have deep lyrics and harmonious melody such as Enigma or some screamo bands (it's tough to even decipher the lyrics anywho) are fantastic.

Melody. Who cares about lyrics if the beat moves you?

Lyric, most definitely. I can't get into a song if the lyrics are stupid.

+1, but I can't get into a song if the melody doesn't move me. It's gotta be both for me. ;) I'm starting to find out I'm a very selective person. About everything--men, food, and even music.

Is that some kind of dig at Jason :p?

I am decidedly a melody person. I love a few artists that some of my friends think are depressing.. I on the other hand couldnt care about the lyrics. Although lately, "no I in threesome" caught my eye just for the connotation :D. I am into soundscapes and a catchy riff or a base line.

I think it depends on the music as well. When I'm feeling down, the lyrics of Staind hit hard. When I'm feeling uppity, the soothing melody of Static-X keeps me going.

Haha, no. Actually, I've always known I'm selective when it comes to men. ;)

I like melodic lyrics. No wait, lyrical melodies. Never mind. I like music.

I like my men without any women in him. :D

Oh, that could be taken so many ways...

Neither- it's the harmony.

Melody, but of nearly equal importance,

it's the harmony.

Good harmonies make me melt.

Good lyrics can make a great song even better, but I don't even know all the words to many of my favorite songs. I love listening to people sing, but they might as well be singing gibberish. I'd never notice.

Depends on the music I'm listening too.

Lyrics are the deal maker/breaker for me. I can have an appreciation for poorly executed music if there is a worthy message in the music.

This is not to say good lyrics will make a bad song good.

Definitely melody! I do include the actual singing in that, but the lyrics aren't that important. Ronnie James Dio clearly shares my take on this, as he comes clean with writing lyrics only to have something to sing, and not to actually say anything. Hence the plethora of rainbows, wizards, dragons and whatnot. :)
