Foo - Transit GRRRR

My transit woes: I try to do the right thing occasionally, like take transit to work--
if all goes well this is like a 20-minute commute on the train with a
bike ride to the office.

But the train that syncs with my schedule is always late--today it was like 20-minutes
late and then it got cancelled entirely. This results in a mad dash back to the car, and
a race to work because my employers in their infinite wisdom don't have a lot big enough
for all of us so it's first come first serve--the great way to start the day! So before
I settle in to a frustrating day of figuring out stuff for other people like wading through
statutes and case law I battle traffic--I may end up like Michael Douglas in Falling Down--
so much for bike-train-bike to work. How is it that we still can't seem to grock the importance
of transit? WTF?

edit: So now I stare at the screen and I feel like I was just here--and I was! Stayed late last night revising a document so that it will actually reference all the right sources and codes. . .for someone who is too ******** to figure this out and do it. . .Nietzsche's eternal recurrence?

Suburban sprawl in the Dallas area makes public transti totally inconvenient. There is no way that my wife and I can get our kids to school and us to work other than to drive.

I agree wtih you that transit should be seamless, not a battle.

Public transportation in Tallahassee still operates on a hub and spoke paradigm with downtown being the hub. The planners simply ignore the real traffic patterns and refuse to route busses where the riders need them.

I'm pretty sure every American city really needs an enema when it comes to transportation planning. Some cities are trying. Other metro areas really just don't care, and assume buses are for people who had too many DWIs to drive.

I know--there is this air of disdain around transit like "I won't
ride with those people"--this is lame. Transit is for
everyone.

The right thing?

We got lucky here when we moved in, there's a bus stop about thirty feet from our front door and one just down and across the street, with the way the route runs if my gf misses the bus going down she just hots the further stop and catches it on the way back about fifteen minutes later after it makes the loop through town.

The only drawback is that she gets out of work at 5pm and the next bus doesn't show up till about 6:15PM.

We've got a pretty good transit system here in the Denver area... it'll be nicer in a few years when they run the trains out further.

I run into a very wide range of people on the bus... kids that take the city bus to school, professional people who don't want to drive into downtown, homeless people, drunks... even a truly crazy person now and then.

Which route I take really has a HUGE effect on the type of people I ride with... I live right by a transit center, and there are 4 different routes I can take that all go either downtown or near downtown... and the people on them are vastly different.

The worst, by far, is the 16, which runs past all the bars. I avoid that one if at all possible... Unfortunately, it also runs the most often, by far.
