I started riding a fixie due to my commute being a little shorter. I figured if I can't coast all the better. :) It's even more fun to see that everyone else riding fixed gear bikes are skinny vegan 20 year old scenester kids.
Just curious who else has ventured into this world.
cheers!
240+, been riding fixed for years (Cross-Check, 1x1, GTB Track).

I applaud you both. I'm a pedal and coast kind of a guy.

I don't commute to work and live in a small hilly town, where I use all of my gears when I am on the road bike. If I lived somewhere else, a fixie might be worth it, but since I rarely coast I am not too worried about it either. Coasting is rare, unless I have to stop.

I love both a thick steak and riding my converted Schwinn fixie. Even at 350 it's a blast to ride to work, the longest I have done was a 38 mile club ride.

I would, but the hills in Florida require too much shifting.

I was down at Dizzy World in April and saw a lot of local riders coming off highway overpasses with nose bleeds. . . .:D

Yup, the fixed gear is your friend. The more I learn about fixing bikes the more I love my fixed gear. The dirty little secret is of course they're not that much harder then a road bike and in some cases they're better.

I built a fixie a few months ago (73 Raleigh Grand Sprort) and really enjoy it. I switch off between my road bike and fixie... depending on my mood. There is something soothing about riding a fixie... no noise, no shifting, just spinning smooth circles; but I have no plans to dump my road bike!

I rode my fixie everywhere for two years. I just graduated and got a job that requires me to drive around all day. That, and I live three blocks from work, so it sits in the corner glaring at me now. :(

I was just gonna post the same subject header...
I couldn't find any fixie/track bikes that are pre-built that I really liked. Most are kinda ugly or don't have the components I want.
Anyways, I'm doing a Fixie build-up for my winter project... I'll be taking pics as I go along.
Expecting piece #1 next week....59cm IRO Jamie Roy frame/fork (white hot)
Here's mine - a 2005 Bianchi Pista. I don't ride it as much as my geared bikes (Florida hills:)), but it is a pleasure to ride. I think a fixie is the closest to man and machine being as one entity.

fixed and a clyde. I have a road bike and a 26" MTB and a 29er MTB, all fixed.
Makes you get strong quickly, but really not an issue at all.

Sorry...........its not a fixed gear but I do ride a single speed that has been recently converted to a double/double ("Double D"). I'm 49 and 260 at 5"11". I ride about 2500 a year and eat way too much. :o

Freaking Bengals. They break my heart every year. Either they lose every game, or all their players are in jail, or (like this year) they lose a ton AND the have a ton of players in jail. Sounds like this dude is pretty cool though.

you think you've got it bad - I started watching NFL and chose the Titans to support
...all the way to the superbowl - yes! :D
...into the brick wall that was the ravens defence - no! :(
...and since then they've been decidedly average. Could be worse, could be a bunch of porpoises. :p

Those fixies are beautiful machines. Studies in pure functionality.
I'm 270, I was riding a fixed around 285.
I'm really tall (6'-3"), so I went with longer cranks (175mm) and a decently low gearing (70 inches) to work with my long legs. It meant I could climb some of the hills around here without destroying my knees, and I had plenty of leverage for getting going. My top speed was fairly low. Because of my huge legs and longer cranks, I couldn't ever really hit the high cadences that the skinny vegans pulled off.
I don't ride fixed any more. It was novel, but I couldn't stand not being able to coast down long hills and it made going over obstacles tougher. I now have a single speed road bike for the 'around town' stuff and couldn't be happier.
