There's always a great Halloween party the same weekend, so I always miss it. :(
SpiderMike's done it a few times. I'm sure he'll chime in shortly.
My girlfriend and I are signed up. Were signed up for the 20 mile ride... even tho neither of us normally rides that far on any kind of regular basis... guess I should try to get a couple longer rides in before then.
not sure what bike she'll be riding... guess it depends on if she can take her normal one on the plane or not.
I'll be on my old Blue with primer grey spots Schwinn Sprint more then likely. Altho I am going to look at some other bikes this weekend... so maybe I'll pick something else up.
I rode the Moonlight Ramble last year with 4 other friends and had a great time. I never heard an official count, but I think around 2,500 - 3,000 riders rode last year. It was a lot of fun. The start downtown was a little slow with the traffic lights timed so that every other block you had to stop ... but once we got past that it was a good route. Since it was only 20 miles, the group I rode with decided not to stop at the break point halfway through but just kept on riding to the finish.
I decided to skip the Moonlight Ramble next weekend in part because I am riding the Lyondell Bike Around the Bay this weekend, just over 70 miles each day on Sat/Sun. Plus, my late 30-something body just doesn't care to repeat biking from 2-3:30 in the morning! It was fun once and I am glad I did this ride as now I have more stories to tell, but it just isn't something I care to do over again. As for the distance, even if you only ride 10 MPH, you can finish this ride in 2 hours, so the 20-miler is definitely the way to go. Have fun, and enjoy it! It is definitely one of the most unique rides you will ever ride.

Chime... Everytime...sheesh. One of the years y'all need to skip the party and come out and ride.
I'll be there. I'll have to set my legs to slooooowwwww. Got a couple of buddies, of the cruising speed variety:D:rolleyes:, coming out to ride.
Hey, Spider, what route does the ramble take? I'm thinking of doing it, but the only bike I've got in working condition right now is my roadie, and I'm concerned about destroying it riding through some damned pothole. That's always a risk, I know, but I'd rather not do it on a lark ride.
For the most part the route is fine. Debris is the only issue I've had. Ran over the can and the tire jammed it up in the fork. Edit that happened in 2000
Last year I was on my converted fixed gear. This year I'll be on the Madison, so again on 700's. I'll be running my headlight (cygo), and my wife's (niterider). That way I can see if there is anything.
I'm riding, along with Chevy42083 and two of our friends.
I'm in. Nate and Chevy, where are you all meeting up beforehand?
Some of us are meeting up at Prince's off of US 59 for our HASTE meet (your welcome to come) before we head out to the GRB.
Sooooo....I'll be the sober guy riding my 07 Schwinn Madison. :D

Hey email me your number so we can meet up and tailgate; nate@klassicthreadz.com

Obligated myself to two parties before the ride then meeting up with my boss at work then riding to the grb from there. I will be riding my cross bike, the weather is forecasted clear at 56F, sounds pretty sweet.
Spidermike, you mention being sober... are there non-sober people doing this? I've never ridden this before, so I'm not quite sure what to expect...
I'm on a blue K2 with a Texas jersey on.
Red Moto Fantom Cross, with orange and black streamers laced through the front wheel spokes (hopefully this won't tangle up).
Sitting here in front of the GRB eating fajitas.

Dr.Nate, check your emails. I am waiting on my buddies. Should be there b4 1.
As to the soberity, it is frowned on. You can get the open container thing and all. If any of the Texas Scum guys are out there... ha, yeah, well.
Wow that was really a wild experience. :D
Dr. Nate and I were the first ones across the line, and the only greeting we got was a grumble from two hobos in front of GRB.

I never got an email, then I scrolled up and saw I had a message on here. This forum is a PITA to check on a smartphone because of all of the ads.

Yeah, that was pretty wild to make that turn onto the street in front of the GRB and see traffic coming at us. The other part that was worrying me was the fact that I couldn't ever drop down on the bars because I was to afraid of having an accident from not being to avoid things in the road on Richmond Ave. Who ever picked that route needs to be fired and some common sense slapped into them.
-Nate
Yeah, the finish line is pretty lackluster. And the route sucked as far as pavement quality this year. Whoever put LaBranch and Richmond in the route needs to stop using mapquest to ste up the route, and actually go ride it. I also missed having the eldoe and westpark bridges in the route this year. I guess too many people complained that it was too hard or something.

I rode a grey fuji fixed gear w/ read glowstick spokes, wearing a blue sweat**** w/ neon green design, and a glowing skull mask strapped to my helmet.
I had a blast even though the route was shorter than wished (not shorter than planned... just shorter than wished), and rougher than I would have liked. Normally I wouldn't complain, BUT I rode my fixed gear which makes it a little more difficult to wheelie/bunny-hop/jump the rear tire over bad road stuff. I was surprised at the number of people with no headlight... and wonder what THEY hit. Very annoying when someone would come up from behind to pass and I couldn't see them cause they had no light. The headlight spot on the ground 4 feet in front of a bike is a nice hint of what's over your shoulder ;)
I rode the snail pace with some friends... we finished with a blistering 10.9mph average over the grueling 16.5miles with only one rest stop the entire 1h 30minutes :D . Rode with a sweatshirt and windpants and never got too hot ;) I kinda wonder if some riders finished before sun-up... I mean, we were blowing past people at our pace. I was in the back of the first group let out of the start, and the stop-lights weren't too bad through downtown... we weren't sprinting, and it wasn't so crowded that it cause problems.
I had a blast and will be back.
Scariest part of the ride for me....having a kid on a road bike, with a long blonde wig , drafting me. Oh and he had no headlight.
As for the route.... I miss the route the included Height Blvd.
Oh yeah, what happened to the Belly-dancers?
Oh yeah, what happened to the Belly-dancers?
I saw a couple at the rest stop wishing a safe ride or something.
More importantly, did anybody else get flashed? :D
I think dr nate was getting some sort of sick pleasure from leading the paceline over every manhole on labranch. Then I lost him at a stoplight and truthfully was glad to be out of his draft. ;)

Why yes, yes I did... by Mr. "The King"?

They didn't bother me one bit. :D
Nate kept swerving out of the way just in time for us to hit each manhole cover.
My girlfriend, afriend of mine, and I had a ton of fun... we were in one of the later groups to leave... I dont think we left until 2:20 or so.
I was on my old blue schwin with primer spots. I had green glowsticks in the front wheel and blue in the back.
I was wearing just light pants and a Tshirt... was pretty comfy the whole way, except just after the middle break... took me a while to get warmed back up after sitting around for a few minutes.

Yeah, there's the break... then the coldest part of the ride. That stretch along 610 and into the park has no concrete to keep the air warm... it's always colder there.

No kidding I was fine until that strech, I thought it was just me.
I figured it was mostly just stopping and having my body cool down...
either way the first bit after the half way break was soooooo cold!
It also doesn't help that you cross a bayou right there. Some years the wind will whip down the bayou and really freeze you out.
