Foo - Why Do Some People Slow Down When Walking Across A Street...

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I know a person in a crosswalk has the right of way...

But why do they slow down and take their time (and I am not talking about granny with a cane)...

I speed up as to not to hold the driver up...

It seems this is a new phenomenon with today's young...

I think it is dang inconsiderate...

Probably for the same reason that they speed up when you try and pass them on interstate.

Oops:D J/k... Only once, when this chubby kid was walking extremely slow every day leaving high school. I made sure to pull into second hard right behind him one day. The kid from then on ran across the road.

I've never seen this happen. I can't imagine its a big deal in VT, with the entire state population smaller than a good number of cities.

If you're driving, roll up to the crosswalk like you ain't gonna stop. That'll get 'em moving.

If you're riding, ride right behind them as quietly as possible, then scream at the top of your lungs. It won't make them move any faster, but it'll scare the **** out of them. And really, isn't that important?

I love pedestrians in huge cities. The mob mentality is just fun. The cars are at the mercy of the mass of people, should they decide it's time to cross the street.

Yeah, I see this a lot.

Usually, it's Middle School kids crossing at a glacial pace...because they can get away with it.

But hey, I'm never in a hurry. Take your time.

Black shirt, black pants, black cap, black socks, black shoes and black hoodie jacket.

Hoodie Jacket?!?! It's 100 freakin' degrees out?!??!

...they wear the same thing at night when the're riding their bicycles.

I ride through a section of town where they do this on purpose. The glide across the street, strutting their stuff, and look right at you while doing it. Even when the light is green. I've gunned it a couple times to see if they double-check. They do.

First law of jaywalking, look the drive right in the eye, makes them feel guilty and nervous.

I've spent most of my time there visiting (and long ago living with) family in southern VT. Sometimes the streets in the tourist towns do get crowed by those turkeys from NY/CT/NJ - winter and summer.

I personally always try to scoot across a crosswalk, but I know a number of people have a "F--- them, they can watch my derriere while I cross" attitude.

I've never understood it myself either. Its probably the same passive-aggressive attitude I see about people who zoom to the left lane on a highway only to go 5-10 miles under the speed limit because they can.

Because they have no control over their lives, so to feel like they have a little power they
walk slow in front of your car. The correct manuver is to run them over.

Also, why do drivers fly down any given street, until you want to cross that street from driving on a cross street. I often think drivers, pedestrians, etc. just want to mess with other people.

Some people have a death wish. Sometimes drivers grant it.

Not quite sure I understand. Few people will feel the slightest bit of guilt for not cutting extra slack to people who are going out of their way to be inconsiderate.

Here in Oregon, peds clearly have the right of way. However some go out of their way to inconvenience vehicles that may be on the roads. I don't like to drive except for as a last resort, but I don't have much sympathy for peds or cyclists who intentionally screw things up for everyone and provoke road ragers against the rest of us.

Share the road should mean just that. We all need to get where we are going.

without "those turkeys" dollars pouring into the state, vermont would be right "up there" with arizona, or arkansas, west virginia, etc.

Hey, AZ gets a good amount of tourist business as well, not as high a percent as VT of course.

Median Household Income of Arizona: $41,963

Median Household Income of Vermont: $42,649

Median Household Income of "those Turkeys": Connecticut $56,409; New Jersey $56,356; New York $44,139 (imagine what it would be if it was just westchester/NYC/LI, i.e. "those turkeys").

why do drivers speed up when you cross the street ? I have drivers aim for me and accelerate occasionally like they want to see me run. One guy in a jeep bumped my leg with his bull bars .
I am disabled with a disk missing from my spine. I can barely walk slowly so I am terrified every time I have to cross any street . I must look normal to any driver who just thinks I'm walking very slowly because I'm trying to be difficult or something.

I think people can tell from eye contact, body lingo, how you time the start of your crossing, etc. what is going on. The issue is not being slow, it is about intentionally being a PITA.

There are plenty of jerk drivers who go off on anyone who delays them in the slightest way. However, most people are reasonable.
