View Full Version : Metabolism and Meds

At the tail end of every summer (August/September), I suffer from allergies to a ridiculous extreme. If I don't med up on antihistamines my eyes, nose and throat itch like crazy. My eyes drip tears like I'm crying and my nose runs like Niagara Falls. Then there's the sneezing - my record sneezing run is 15 sneezes in a row - I've pulled muscles in my back and sides from repeated sneezing fits.

So the antihistamines work GREAT! They dry me out a little (I just overhydrate to compensate). The strange thing is that on a normal day my regular dose will last me about 5 hours. Even if I take one right before I ride however, the meds effect will last an hour at most.

So here's my question: Is your metabolism cranked so much higher during a ride that your body will consume the meds in such a short time frame?

If this is the case...can you just imagine and visualize your body's engine stoking the fire and raging through the calories (and whatever else is in your body)??

Just something cool I experience every year I thought I'd share and see if anyone's got some good physiological answer for...

Yes, no or maybe. There's no rule as to how the side effects (or wanted effect) of a given substance will last under stress.

Drugs are simply a way to classify substances that accutely affect the body in specific and powerful ways. Like, vitamins, minerals and hormones, they come and go and metabolize at different rates under different circumstances.

There's no doubt exercise is affecting your antihistamines effectiveness, but it would be wise to contiune to follow normal dosage guidelines.

Ask the Doctor? That's too easy!

...and I wanted to see if anyone else was experiencing this in the cycling clique...
