Road Cycling - YEAH! My Avg. Speed went up!!

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I have been stuck at 16 to 17 avg. mph
FOR-EV-ER!!!!
The last couple of days though I have finally broken into 18 mph avg. and I was going 20 miles. So I didn't think that was too shabby.
Especially since I started cycling about 9 months ago.
Yipee!!!!
Sorry I just had to stop and "smell the roses!" as you might say?
Hope you guys don't mind!
:p
Congrats, Tilly1!
That's better than my 14+ I've been averaging when I go for distance! And don't even ask about my hill speed:rolleyes: !
My speed has been very slowly climbing and yesterday I cut 10 minutes off my time for the 6 mile climbing ride to my house from my Weight Watchers meeting. WooHoo!

Good going. I guess everyone else on the road will just have to watch out when you start averaging 20mph. :)
It is very exciting to reach a milestone or a goal! 18mph is rolling - good job!
Thanks guys I was pretty excited. Especially since there was a climb in the ride as well. :p
Finally happy to have some improvement in my speed!
Thanks again!

Motivational reply: Yea, and? Call us up when you hit 20mph. :D
Serious replay: Congrats! Nothing matches that feeling when you hit a goal, especially one you have to work so hard for!

Tilly1: that is an awesome breakthrough. i look back in my journals of rides and see july 18th, 1997 ---> avg'ed 16.8!!! i felt strong...was really flying. can't wait till tomorrow.
i look back at those days with wonder. now the stakes are higher and gains are slow and small. i remember when 20mph avg for a ride was unthinkable. now it is natural on my fast days.
now i find myself being able to pull on rides going 23-24 mph. but went on a group ride this past saturday and the pace went to 29 mph for a while only 1/2 hour into the ride and i blew up and limped home. now 24 and a bit is my upper limit for longer lengths at a time.
but nothing matches the enthusiasm of my journal posts when i hit 17mph or 18 mph on 30 mile rides!!! thanks for reminding me what this is all about.

I'm stuck at 14.8 - about where I was during the cycling season last year. One big difference though is that the length of my average ride is 11 miles longer this year. So all in all I feel pretty good about this year's stats vs last year.

Congrats Tilly1! :D
I also have learned to break into the 18 mph average time bracket and I know the feeling. My coworker and I rode 39 miles yesterday morning with a 18.2 av. and this am I did 20 at 18.4. I don't know what the hills around there are like, here we have a lot of rolling hills with flats between. I was killing myself trying to do 23-25 mph in the flats and struggling on the rolling hills this was getting me in the 17 mph range. Last week, sorta by accident, I decided to just do right around 20 in the flats and rest and that way I have something to hammer the hills with. I found I made climbs at 20 that before I was loosing time badly on. Now I'm seeking out the biggest baddist hills we have in this flat land to train on.
Once again, be safe and ride on!:p
