Sorry, but that last story about the baby was the worst. From what I hear, the driver of the panel van is being charged w/ criminally negligent homicide because he was speeding.

Police said it was unclear what Cambrelen was doing riding her bicycle on the road at that time of the morning.
WTF?!? What was the Subaru doing on the road at that time of the morning?

Horrible.
I have to say, I've almost been run down a couple of times when I'm heading up to or back from Central Park to do early loops. Drivers think they can do whatever in the early morning hours. If you're out riding at that time of day (night), get lights & be extra careful.

Saturday nights are the worst.

The worst offenders are private sanitation and news delivery trucks.

Don't forget tow truck drivers.

I was driving my car yesterday and some of the things people do are quite scary.

Cars accelerating to zig-zag on a local road. How can they possibly anticipate someone popping out of nowhere?

Cars accelerating onto the curb and into a garage. How can they possibly anticipate someone just standing on the sidewalk or in the garage?

Two of us were riding on Riverside Dr heading north after laps in Central park.
A police car was in the service road at about 152nd st and turned right into us.
We were going about 13 miles an hour with a double Nite Rider on the bars full beams on.
I mean they were not looking, not going fast, but luckily my buddy avoided them and me him. I mean we had the light, everything we did was by the book.

What da hell

...another terrible death caused by a vehicle: A Cadillac Escalade SUV backed up over a baby...The 8-month-old died...police are probably not going to charge the driver, but "It was unclear whether the huge Escalade was equipped with a rearview camera system."

What does having a camera to back up have anything to do with reversing over someone... not being able to control your vehicle is no excuse for anything, more proof that in the US the best way to kill someone is with a car, you can be sure as hell that if the same person was cleaning a legally owned firearm and was idiot enough to neglect to properly unload and clear the action, point it in an unsafe direction and pull the trigger and the stray shot killed the same child that it would be all over the news and the guilty party would rightly be in jail or at least be pending a charge of some kind. Why killing someone with a motor vehicle is forgiven nearly all the time is appalling.

I would never ride a bike on a saturday night. Some you are guys are nuts and this is coming from a bike messenger. But these stories are tragic and sad man they really need to make more bike lanes and hold these drivers more accountable. It just reminds you how dangerous riding a bike can be.

I've seen that it is more dangerous to ride in certain areas of Brooklyn than in Manhattan. I live in East Flatbush and there is nowhere worse than church avenue(headed towards flatbush), flatbush avenue(around parkside n south), and utica ave btwn church n linden. These are the worst places to ride because the dollar cab drivers are twice as dangerous as the cabbies

From a comment on the web site

An giant SUV crushes a baby in stroller ON THE SIDEWALK, and no charges are to be filed? What don't I get here? Vehicles, of any size, aren't allowed on the sidewalk. Period.

'nuff said

There was a big article a few months ago about child death by SUV. According to the article it's a silent epidemic. Turns out hundreds of kids per year are being killed. In many cases, parents backed over or ran down their own kids because they couldn't see them from inside the huge vehicle.

I mean, just look at the tiny $#*@% windows on an H2. You have to be five feet tall just to be seen by that thing!
