I'm removing my Shimano Octalink BB, and I'm a bit confused as to which side is the fixed flange and which side is the removable ring.

Here's a picture of the bike, viewed normally (left is left), with the removal tool held in place with a skewer.

Looking at this web page (http://www.parktool.com/repair/readhowto.asp?id=94) it would seem that I have it backwards and that the ring on the left indicates that it is the fixed flange?

The drive side is the fixed flange.

One more question, do you think white lithium grease is adequate for installing the new hollowtech BB?

I actually had good luck on a recent BB overhaul using teflon tape -- it certainly hasn't creaked since then. But that wasn't a hollowtech, if that matters.

Sure, just about any commercially available grease will work.
