ok-
1) Pretend you have a sponsorship with zipp where you can get anything for 50% off.
2) You have a TT bike and a race bike you need to equip for all kinds of racing.
3) you dont have an exact budget. Find the best mix between buying everything and just buying one set of 404s to use on both.
So that's it... What would you do??
Would you pay for zedtech? Ceramic on one set? All?

the money you would make wouldn't cover the other sponsorship losses you'd face from getting kicked off your team.

Zed6's for road; 404 tubs for track and 808s/Vuka bars for TT's. I want to do an Ironman 70.3 so no disks for me.

just discs?
50% is very good especially since its on everything they make including the new vumaquad :-)

And 404's for half of dead-cost through a shop.

Huh? As far as I know, the Kona IM is the only place that bans discs. Every HIM I've been to has had plenty of discs.

I doubt it. I'd like to see how they pulled that one out. Zipp themselves say that hardly anybody gets anything for free.
And the cheapest for all around would be 404's and a disc IMO.

At 50% off I still couldn't afford any of them.

+1. I'll stick with my Open Pros that haven't yet failed me when it comes to getting the occasional win.

Make my team car bright yellow with a bunch of Carbones on the roof...
not that I'm sure I'd really want to put that kind of money towards zipp, but:
404 front, 808 rear. If you've got enough cash to buy replacement sets go tubie, otherwise buy clincher. Zipp clincher disk if you've got money to burn.
Vumaquad sounds cool and all but just get a 'dale with SL cranks and save the cash.

Factory seconds that are out of true just barely over the tolerance. You'd never notice the difference. The seconds are just as good as any HED's or Campagnolo's.
If you want to save $ you'll be covered for TT's with the 909 set and road races with the 909 (404) front and a 303 rear.

Well that's slightly different. Seconds that they can't/won't sell and give to someone they know vs. 50% a spot on wheel that costs 2K retail.
I'm not arguing the fact that the blems are any less of a wheel, but just saying that 50% off a set of Zipps is a good deal coming from Zipp.

I'd get a set of 404s and a disc. I already have a 44mm dimpled 303 front.
But i'd probably get a set of the new 60mm reynolds. so much cheaper and so what if they are a few seconds slower than zipps. I'm not at that level where fractions of a percent matter (nor are the majority of the people here)

Theyre going to be way overpriced for 08, not a fan of their hubs. And theres better stuff out there for the same price.

Zipp = Nike
Big $$$ for name, very little substance.
I'll stick with my aluminium (yes, that's right, they're not carbon) clinchers until someone starts paying me to use their overpriced wheels.
I don't care if you can get them half price, $1500 is still too much for a set of goddamn wheels. Besides, I love beating all the guys on expensive aero wheels in the local crits.

Like what? Not trying to stir anything up, but what would be better than a 404 wheel set for a deep aero tubular set? Not counting anything over 3k for a set.

I'd take some DA 50s, Aeolus 5.0s, or the Reynolds SDV 66T. Maybe even some HED Stinger 60s.

all of which, except Hed, would be more than twice what the 404s would be with a discount. Not to mention they have tested worse.

I remember seeing a translated test out of a German Cycling mag somewhere on here with the Aelouses testing higher than all Zipps except for the 808. Not sure where the HED's etc slotted in. As for all but the Hed being "more than twice what the 404's would be at discount" I can vouch for the fact that at discount (shop employee) has me getting some Aeolus 5.0's or 6.5's for a price comparable (actually less) than the Zipp's (303 or 404).

How is that different from 2007 or 2006?
Buy Zipp crap on eBay one year old. Then it's not so overpriced. I snagged year old Zipp 404's with tires for $1200. They rock. The lame resale value (compared to what people pay new) underscores how overpriced it is. When a sponsored racer can buy a set of bicycle wheels for $700 less than me (and I do get an LBS discount) - that borders on price gouging. But if Zipp can get away with it, more power to them. I think that's capitalism.
By the way, my $1200 Zipps will retain a very high percentage of what I paid for them if I resell them. That's capitalism too. But I'll probably be riding on them for years, until I buy the upgraded set used off eBay a couple of years from now.

Yeah, I have no problem with Zipp charging what they do for their wheels, I just have a problem forking over that much cash for a wheelset.
Maybe I'm tight-fisted, but racing bicycles on a student's income requires compromise ;)
I agree with the sentiment that there are some equally good products out there for much better prices.

And yet Bonty's have survived Roubaix. And they've tested better than 404s.

This is exactly why I'm asking about other options to look at, because right now a set of dimpled 404s with a PT SL can be found on ebay at what seems to be the best value for aero wheels. Well, not right now as in right now, but as in if you keep an eye on ebay. I really don't care what my wheels say on them, I just care that they work.
