It looks like you are trying to stop rain from soaking your butt and your face. Don't worry about how you look :)

on a look standpoint alone it'd look awkward

fenders look HORRIBLE in my opinion. A full 3 piece set came on my enduro and it looked so bad I was almost embarrased test riding the bike before i bought it. The rear one looks fine and I have actually used it once, but the 2 front pieces, especially the one over the top of the tire, are huge. This is not a motorcycle, I can't imagine why Specialized would put fenders stock on an Enduro.

I sometimes use a front fender in really muddy/wet conditions offroad. I don't use it to keep myself from getting wet or muddy, but to keep mud out of my eyes. The tires that came stock with my bike were very good at shedding mud - directly up into my eyes. I wear sunglasses with clear lenses, but when fog becomes an issue the fender takes care of most of the mud. I use a lower profile fender instead of something giant like a THE. It doesn't look to bad to me, and it's functional in certain weather.

the set that came on my enduro looked awful. I can honestly say its the only thing specialized has made that looked bad.

I bought a THE, but have yet to use it. To me, it's more function over form. I'd rather be able to see, than to worry about being seen.
I did get one that matched though!

thats what i was looking at gettin. A THE DH fender
i mostly want it to spice my bike up. more for looks
Function before fashion. let that decide for you.
They are ripoffs. At my local store they have one for 70 bucks (cad). If you get on just get a canadian tire one or something.

I bought mine on-line for $10 USD.
I just bought a new digital camera, and need to practice with it, so tonight I'll snap a shot and post it!

You can find another cheap way of making one that does the same thing at this link to my website: http://www.mtbworld.netfirms.com/howto/mud_guard.htm

You can get THE fenders most anywhere online for around 20 bucks or so. Places like cambriabike and even performance or jenson have THE fenders that cheap at times.

Closeout deal at Pricepoint. Don't know if there are any left! I think it was $9.95.

Wouldn't mud get between the back tire and fender and jam it up a bit? It doesn't look like there is much clearance in the rear?

Half inch of clearance. This is a pic of the same bike as mine, but not my bike, so I couldn't tell you if that is enough clearance in mud or not. If I was riding in mud, I would probably forgo the rear fender completely. This is a 29"er, and clearances are pretty good. You could probably run 2.3 or 2.4 without any issues.

Your nuts. The thing you made would only work if the wheel was spinning backwards. HAHAAHHAAH

No. Actually, as the wheel is turning, it flings mud forward up and as you're moving along, it hits your face. Ive made and tested this mud guard 'www.mtbworld.netfirms.com/howto/mud_guard.htm' and it works just as well as any other and its made with stuff you have in your house right now.
Think about it, it works on the same principle as any other fender
