I have an older Cinelli handlebar (26.3mm clamp diameter) that I'd like to mate with a Nitto Technomic stem. Ordinarily I'd just trial fit it but it'd be a major pain to untape and remove the old bar. Who has tried something similar with a Cinelli bar and how'd it work?

If you have a 25.4mm diameter stem, it really won't work with the Cinelli bar. That 1mm difference is actually a pretty big difference. I mean, you probably could jam it in there, but just because you could does not mean you should.

Even if the Nitto is 26.0, I'd be concerned about fitting a 26.4 Cinelli bar. Any reason the Cinelli is worth bothering with instead of getting the correct diameter bars?

Not any good reason. The bike already has a perfectly functional brown Icon handlebar. It's Cinelli, it's black, I already own it, and I think that it would look good on that particular bike.

BiKyle (http://www.bikyle.com/StemsRd.asp) has NOS 26.4 XA Cinelli stems (scroll down to "Quill Stems"). They're $55, but if you really want to use those bars that's probably the way to go.
