That's right, folks. I got a job. I started yesterday at Borders (the bookstore chain). Of course I'm commuting by bike. Would I do it any other way? Actually, the store I'm working at is such a short distance from my house that I would feel weak and foolish to take a car, even if we owned a car for me to take. My commute is about 2.5 miles through pleasant residential streets. Bike accomodations aren't perfect. No place to store the bike inside, though there are some decent racks just outside the front door. It's not like I have a super expensive bike anyway.

Congratulations! And you got some nice crisp weather to go with that new commute. :)

Happy pedalling,
Kevin S.

Yay for you!
I try to commute a couple times a week, and never fail to be amazed at how I'm always in a better mood & am more alert than when I drive. You'll be getting employee of the month awards (& raises) in no time, just for riding your bike to work! :)

HILLARY! My gosh, the things you say! Your beautiful Raliegh would not be happy to hear you talking like that! None of my bikes are expensive, and are closer to being called classics than near new, but I love 'em just the same!! They haul my considerable personage around with nary a complaint, and always see me safely home.

All kidding aside, congrats on the job! And how nice it is that it is so close to home! Of course, you know adding little detours to your ride won't hurt anything! Let's see....a 5 mile round trip should stretch to 40 pretty easy!!

Good luck!!

A-HA! Another unsuspecting victim falls under the spell of fun and satisfaction that is bicycle commuting! One more down, only a couple of hundred million to go. :D

Way to go, HR!

Nebill-

Alas, the Raleigh is staying at home for this commute. I've been commuting on my old Trek hybrid (aka "The Cow"). It has baskets to haul all my assorted junk around. The Raleigh doesn't even have a rack at the moment, or a lock to call its own. I'm considering keeping the Raleigh for fun/training rides. I figure the trek will do better in rainy/nasty weather anyway.

No worry about spending all my money on books. By the time I'm done with 8 hours of working at Borders, the last thing I want to do is spend my free time shopping there! Actually, having spent all day ringing up people one after the other (I probably sold thousands upon thousands of dollars of books today), I feel almost cured of the need to go shopping. At least temporarily.

Well, the "cow" is probably the better choice, but I bet the Raliegh would be happy to fill in if needed! And, the baskets will come in handy!

I still have my hybrid, and plan on using it when the weather gets bad around here, as I know it will. Or, maybe I will press my trusty Roubaix back into service. I am glad that I have my Sagres, as it got me started biking...but I love riding the thoroughbreds!

Glad to hear that you are back among the ranks of the employed! Have fun!

(And, don't forget what I said about the detours! Add a few extra miles to the ride, and you will arrive at work ready to go!!)

I agree. Why do it any other way?

Congradulations and welcome. Remember once you start you can never go back. I know with time you will be able to build that 2.5 mile run into a 10 mile commute if you wanted too, even on the *cow.* I have an old Gary Fisher Sphinx that is my cow. I did just get a new cow for the stable. Found an old Peugeot I plan to make my winter beater.

Welcome aboard, commuting adds so many good things to your life. It gives you the time you need to figure it all out, it slows life down to the perfect speed and promotes good health. Stick with it and have fun. What are these comments I'm hearing about the Raieigh, My favorite ride is a Raleigh technium, All bikes have character, there are no bad bikes. Enjoy.
