General Cycling Discussion - Bikeforums.net slow in the evenings?

Is it just me or has anyone else noticed that bikeforums.net slows way down in the evenings? I checked my cable modem connection with a couple of different speed test sites and there's no problem on my end and other sites load fine, but this one really seems to drag the last few nights.

I just figured it was me. But I got wondering after noticing that other websites were quicker/normal speed. Anyone know why?

same here! i though it was only me too......guess it might be everyone

I just think more people are online in the evenings, and it just clogs down the net in general.
BTW, I don't notice any slowdown on my side.

not much here.. and I'm on the east coast. Try this the next time its slow, go into a comand prompt (start -> run "cmd") and type tracert www.bikforums.net

if you get in the hundreds of ms it is starting to get slow on that point in the route. lots of times there will be an overloaded router. If your on cable at night, so is everyone in your neighborhood and thus they are all using its speed, decreasing yours.

I'm no expert, but PHP is fast and if joe has this on a linux box (I'm hoping :)) they the only slow down will be the server retreiving data from the sql backend. So, those waiting messages my just be data processing speed...

it could be eleventy billion reasons...

I ran a traceroute to the site as well as pinging it and all results were normal ( < 50 ms ping times, no bottlenecks in the traceroute). Tonight doesn't seem so bad so maybe it's an occasional thing. I know there are various virii making the rounds of the 'net slowing things down, but I would expect to see the effects of those in the traceroute and pings and I didn't see that. Ah well, I'll enjoy the relatively fast page loads while they last, but I gotta tell ya that the past few nights the forums have been almost unusable (for me, anyway) but I could go to any other site and see no problems at all. :confused:

Being in Australia I'm usually online when most people are asleep. Works fine for me.:D

Quite a bit slower. Its really about time i get a dedicated server, but honestly, just cant afford it any time soon... :(

I'll talk to the host, and try to cut off some of the fat on the site to speed things up.

Slowest modem I owned was a 320baud external with the phone plugged into the top of it. Interesting setup. There was no internet to speak of (I know there was but text surfing with lynx sucked) and bbs's (I used a Hex modded Renegade BBS if anyone cares ;)) were the king of the day using x-modem,y-modem or z-modem as the transfer protocol of the day :)... I ran the bbs on a 2400b and later upgrade to 9600, 14400, 28800 (first bbs in Ontario to have that speed) and then later a wopping 33.6. I miss those days.

That said I find bikeforums signifigantly slower than any other sight I visit. It does speed up a lot during the day and after 2am my time. :)..But I also have 13 to 15 bounces where some of them almost hit 100. :)

BTW I have never heard of a 1 baud. That would be nasty. Slowest I ever saw and used was 110baud. Nastly..1 letter took many seconds at times haha

BTW for the curious a baud rate is an estimate of the number of characters per second. 2400 baud would be 240 characters per second if my memory serves.

Hard to say - that's about the time I log on during my lunchbreak at work. The web access we have from work is crap - so it could just be that. I don't log on during my lunchbreak as much as I once did.

I guess I'm to young to affectivly quote buad modems... at only 19 i have never seen one, other than the speed of my old cell phone :)

Joe, if you need a machine i think i can do that for you, i just do not have the connection.

Well, kind of. A 'baud' is a signal state transition and in the very early modems this meant the same as bits per second since each signal transition represented one bit. As modem technology got more spiffy they figured out how to represent multiple bit values within each state transition (baud) by using techniques such as phase-shift keying, quadrature amplitude modulation and constellation encoding. For instance, the underlying baud rate of a V.32bis modem (14,400) is 2400 baud, with 6 bits encoded per baud using quadrature amplitude modulation.

Sorry, just had to geek out a bit since I do that kind of stuff for a living... :D I remember well the days of dial-up BBS... nothing like readialing forever to get into a popular BBS that only had one line, and then taking hours to download the latest game or program that probably wasn't more than 100K but took forever with my old 2400 bps Everex internal modem. Ah, those were the days... ;)

Anyway, as Joe said, I too live at the opposite side, so I'm awake when pretty much everyone is asleep (my timezone GMT+800)..
