The thirty-third (33) annual Red Flannel Metric Century (67 mi.) and half metric (33 mi.) will depart The Oberlin Community Service Center, Oberlin, OH at 9:00 AM, eastern standard time on Sunday, November 4, 2007.
START-FINISH ... The start-finish and registration is at the Oberlin Community Service Center (http://www.mapquest.com/maps/map.adp?formtype=address&addtohistory=&address=285%20S%20Professor%20St&city=Oberlin&state=OH&zipcode=44074-1554&country=US&geodiff=1), just off S. Main Street., Oberlin OH. If you are driving via the Ohio Turnpike (Exit 140) or I-90/2, exit at route 58. Take route 58 south to Oberlin. Continue south on Rte 58 (Main ST) past the square a few blocks. Look for the Bike Path. Parking is limited at registration, but there is ample parking in the City lots off S. Main Street. They're behind City Hall and the GTE building. Look for signs. We should have the help of the Oberlin Police for parking. A MAP (http://www.lorainwheelmen.org/Oberlin%20map.pdf) of the Oberlin area is available in PDF format.
REGISTRATION ... Advanced registration ($15.00) will be accepted until October 27, 2007. Late registration (after October 27th and the day of the ride) will be $20.00. Registration fee includes map, and three snack stops (100 km) and a commemorative water bottle. There will be NO patches! All riders will be included in a raffle with great cycling prizes. Please make checks payable to the LORAIN WHEELMEN. Please include a SASE for confirmation if you would like one.
OVERNIGHT ACCOMMODATIONS ... are available at the Oberlin Inn, downtown Oberlin. For reservations, call (440) 775-1111. Other options are the Days Inn and Motel 6, located in Amherst, (approx 8 miles north of Oberlin on SR 58 at SR 2). Call (440) 985-1428 or (440) 988-3266 for reservations.
ROUTE ... The route will be somewhat familiar to regular riders. We'll be going down Mill Hollow's improved 12½% east side. The first food stop (for the 100km riders) will be in Mill Hollow Park Vermilion hill has been replaced with one on Sperry Rd in Swift Hollow. It has a nice repaved downhill run followed by a tiered climb. We'll take a route through Berlin Hts. to Milan close to a route used a few years ago. The route into Milan will be the familiar one on Jefferies Road. We'll feast on Black Bean soup & Chili at Edison Park and return to Oberlin via a revised southern route through Wakeman, where a afternoon snack awaits you. The route from Wakeman had been revised. The 50 km riders will take a southern route to Wakeman where they'll have an AM snack at the gazebo before they join the 100 km route and return to Oberlin. The short route will be mostly flat. Both routes will use the west end of the Lorain Co. Metro Parks Bike Path for their return to Obelrin.
SAG WAGON ... Riders with physical injuries or unrepairable mechanical breakdowns will be given first priority for sag wagon service. If necessary, other riders will be picked up as time and circumstances permit. The last sweep will begin about 4 PM. All riders should be off the road by 5 PM.
WEATHER ... during the history of the Red Flannel, riders have seen a variety of weather ranging from a bone chilling blizzard, to temps of 70° plus, to pounding rain. The last few years have been great weather. Before that, we had a string of really bad years! Let's hope for a return engagement of the 2003/2004 weather, when we had about 400 riders. 2005 saw a terrible thunder storm at 7 AM. After an hour, it kinda cleared and the (big) winds came! I counted only 40 riders that braved the headwinds to Milan. In all, 125 riders braved the wind and rain. Sunny weather returned in 2006 when it climbed to 54° in the afternoon. 260 riders enjoyed the day!

The weather looks to be good. I plan on being there, only doing the 1/2 metric, haven't been on the bike much since Hancock.

How about we meet at 8:45 at the registration desk. I am easy to spot. Look for the guy on the red Specialized Tarmac with red tires.

The "wow" part was just to obvious. My wife always calls me the master of the obvious so I just keepmy mouth shut now....LoL. I rode a little today.I rode to Eddy's in North Olmstead then over to Crocker Park for a Coffee.

ok! there i did it.....5,003 for the year. That's good for me consdiering this is my first full year riding and my goal was 2,550 :D
Hey that's a good ride for you today. Sounds like you are really familiarizing yourself w/the lay of the land, kudos to you.
I like Eddy's in N.O., the guys there are nice. I bought my first bike from them.

Not a bad ride today. Temps at the beginning of the ride were in the low 40's and around 50 by the end of the ride with overcast skies. I had the pleasure of meeting a few other forum members today, Chipcom and Moose. Chip and I rode the first half of the ride together and had a really nice time. The route was a little challenging with a few climbs but primarily it was made up of rolling farmland. Very little traffic and nice roads for most of the ride made it an ideal route. There were 3 rest stops along the 64 miles. The first stop featured Scratch made pancakes. The 2nd rest stop featured homemade Chili and Chicken Noodle soup along with yummy Banana Bread. The 3rd stop had lots and lots of cookies. The white macadamia nut cookies were a real treat :)

I had a decent ride for not riding in almost much the last two months. The 32 mile route was pretty flat for the first half. The second half had a few challanging hills.
Funny and ironic, I was chased by a dog around mile 20. (Four miles after the cookie stop) for about 1/4 to 1/2 mile, boy could that mutt run. When I got back I checked to see if I won anything from the raffle. I DID................ a can of HALT!!!!!!! Not kidding.

I was on the red Roubaix Expert. I'm the guy who missed the turn at the top of the hill in Milan along with you. I see from your posts you are new to the area. Our group rides every Wednesday at 6:30 and meets behind the Berea Library. You are a "strong rider" and would be a welcome addition. There are usually between 12 and 16 riders who meet if the roads are dry, temp is above 22 degrees and two guys show up. Good fast pace, lots of "hill and red light sprints and re-grouping, then we go to a local micro brewery and have a beer and sandwich! (the best of both worlds) Rides vary from going downtown, out to the country past Valley City and or a mixture of Metro Park and west side suburban roads. Some of the guys also ride with the Medina Club's Tue on weeknight, but, those rides ended last week and will not start until spring. The Medina club's web site says the ride is at 12 to 15 mph, not true! There are several groups who ride at the touring pace as well as the faster group. We have done some 30 mile rides and averaged over 21 mph for the whole ride that included warming up.

Hey Gary, I can't believe I missed you AGAIN on Sunday. :( Dan and Tina told me you were fifteen minutes ahead at the first rest stop, so I knew there was no way I'd be seeing you that day.
It was a great route, the food was fantastic. I would do it again, for sure. I was blessed to be riding w/a couple good friends who waited for me while I slogged up the inclines w/my dear friend granny. It wasn't my best day on the bike, but I live to ride another day.
Well I suppose one of these days I will actualy get to meet you in person!
Today is a day off, and I am riding w/the Portage county ROMEO'S (Retired Old Men Eating Out). It's a really nice group, today we start in Medina, which is pretty close to me. I'm glad the weather forecast didn't turn out as awful as predicted.

Well that was fun today, headwinds, crosswinds, even a tailwind, but plenty of wind that's for sure....and it's good to be out riding my bike when the first snowflakes of the season fall.
I'm thinking of making that an annual tradition :D
