Southern California - Endurance Swims in SoCal??

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I'm trying to find a place to get started and looking at events for endurance swimmers, 2+mile swims
Help me find some info please!
How far are you swimming now? Perhaps start with some pool swims?

Hi,
Have you tried a swimming forum? I'd assume that they exist as Masters swimming is very popular. Asking about swimming on a cycling forum (even with the random triathletes) seems rather non-productive.

Start in Santa Monica and go west. If you aimed correctly, you'll get to Catalina Island. The ocean is like a big salty chemical polluted lake.

Would you want new cyclists referred to a triathlete forum? Pshaw!
If you want to pull water for hours while staring into the green void, just go to La Jolla, CA down near San Diego. It's a magnificent, sheltered cove with plenty of kayakers, lifeguards and fellow swimmers around:

Down by the cove, there's even a section of the water marked off with buoys that is supposed to be for swimmers only. It didn't stop me from paddling a kayak through it though.

Well, there is a triathalon forum on this board (near the bottom).
Will most likely get better responses there.

I don't think you need to be a member to listen to the podcast.

Unfortunately, most long distance swim events are over for the year but a good place to look for races/events is here www.mortonsaltreport.homestead.com
The two Pier to Pier swims in Socal are good events -- the Hermosa pier to pier and the Newport/Balboa.
You can at least look at the past years calendar to get a good idea of the type of events available next year.

you could try the annual Pier to Pier swim in Hermosa Beach during the summer. The distance is about 2 miles. If you really get in shape they have a San Pedro to Catalina event. Its only 26 miles. The longest distance I have ever swum (swam?) (swimmed?) is 4.1 miles.....and I felt like CRAP afterwards.

hey thanks SunFlower!! I am going to train for the San Pedro to Catalina. I can do 3 miles right now without feeling TOO bad but I just started 2 weeks ago.
I'm swimming at YMCA on Vanowen and Wilbur(in SFV) and the Santa Monica Community College(in Santa Monica) on 17th and Ocean Drive/Pico.
Breast stroke is a great relax stroke for me and Freestyle when my arms feel good. I'm more of a power swimmer, big strokes and slow.
and I think its "the longest distance I ever swam was 4.1 miles" for proper grammar, but I could be wrong this is my second language.
Anyways thanks guys. I will still be doing fun rides and long distance rides just not so fast anymore. I am getting my body read for the catalina event. I will train hard until I can do it...
